Abstract: A method for shifting multi-speed transmissions of marine propulsion devices each having a power head and a shift schedule for shifting between first and second gears to transmit torque from the powerhead. The method includes configuring the transmissions of leader and follower marine propulsion devices to shift when shift schedules of the leader and of the follower indicate shift recommendations, respectively. The method further includes receiving a request to shift the transmission of the leader when the shift schedule of the leader indicates the shift recommendation. The method further includes determining whether conditions are met for the follower to follow the leader in shifting. The method further includes automatically requesting, when conditions are determined to be met for the follower to follow the leader, to shift the transmission of the follower so as to be coordinated with shifting the transmission of the leader.

Abstract: An outboard motor has a top cowl and a service lid on the top cowl is movable into and between a closed position enclosing the powerhead compartment and an open position providing manual access to the powerhead compartment from above the outboard motor. An engine is in the powerhead compartment, wherein a peripheral gap is defined between the top cowl and the engine. A serviceable engine oil device is in the peripheral gap and is manually accessible from above the outboard motor when the service lid is in the open position. A serviceable transmission fluid device is in the peripheral gap and is manually accessible from above the outboard motor when the service lid is in the open position. A serviceable gearcase fluid device is in the peripheral gap and is manually accessible from above the outboard motor when the service lid is in the open position.

Abstract: A system for controlling an outboard motor attached to a boat includes an input, a light unit, and a controller. The input is operable by an operator to select a control mode of the outboard motor. The light unit includes a plurality of light sources. The controller is connected to the input and the light unit. The controller controls the outboard motor according to the control mode. The controller controls the light unit to light the plurality of light sources in a pattern indicating a movement of the boat according to the control mode.

Abstract: A marine vessel propulsion machine ventilation apparatus includes a first ventilation film (31), a second ventilation film (35), and an air chamber (27). The first ventilation film (31) permits passing of a gas, prevents passing of a liquid, and has one film surface facing the outside. The second ventilation film (35) permits passing of a gas, prevents passing of a liquid, and has one film surface facing the inside of a device accommodation case (19). Another film surface of each of the first ventilation film (31) and the second ventilation film (35) faces the air chamber (27).

Abstract: A boat including a propulsion system and methods of operating the boat to produce a surfable wake. The propulsion system has a port propulsion unit and a starboard propulsion unit, each including a propulsor and a motor. The port propulsion unit and the starboard propulsion unit can be operated or oriented differently from each other. The propulsor on the surf side of the boat can be positioned in a first trim position and the propulsor on the non-surf side of the boat can be positioned in a second trim position, with the first trim position being higher than the second trim position. The motor on the surf-side of the boat can be operated at a first speed and the motor on the non-surf-side the boat operated at a second speed. An angle of toe can be set between the port propulsor and the starboard propulsor.

Abstract: A marine propulsion system for propelling a marine vessel includes at least two steerable rear marine drives that each generate forward and reverse thrusts, wherein each rear marine drive is independently steerable to a range of steering angles, and a lateral marine drive configured to generate starboard and port thrusts on the marine vessel. The system further includes a user input device, such as a joystick, operable by a user to provide a propulsion demand input commanding lateral movement of the marine vessel and rotational movement of the marine vessel. A control system is included that is configured to control steering and thrust of each of the at least two rear marine drives and thrust of the lateral marine drive based on the propulsion demand input so as to generate the lateral movement and/or the rotational movement commanded by the user.
