Teachers and authors accessing the correlating system are able to author and select learning components to be correlated to the plurality of educational requirements sets. An educational requirements set can be a set of state educational standards, a set of school district educational standards or a set of corporate training or certification requirements. The correlation of educational components to the grouping of educational requirements and of learning components to a set of educational components are generated and stored by a server, preferably accessible over the internet through the public switched telephone network. Using the correlation system of the present invention, teachers and authors have the ability to develop lesson plans which are correlated to standards within the plurality of sets of educational requirements.

The present invention includes an apparatus and a method for teaching relationships between numbers and how to perform certain types of mathematical operations. The system includes a television channel selection device, such as a remote control device with a visual display. The user selects a channel to view, and is presented with a mathematical problem involving the channel number. When the problem is correctly solved, the television switches to the selected channel. If an incorrect solution is entered, the user is given further opportunities to solve the problem before being prompted to a solution. The degree of difficulty of the problems can be adaptively adjusted, depending upon the accuracy of the user's answers.

The electronic picture book of the present invention includes a plurality of pages graphically depicting or telling a story. The book further includes an LCD screen and a speaker to provide a reader with animation sequences and sounds that relate to the graphical pictures on the pages. A set of buttons is provided to trigger the animation sequences and sounds. While reading the book, each page indicates a button to depress. The reader, depressing the correct button, is then provided with animation sequences and sounds indicative to the graphic representations on the page.

This specification discloses a method and system for learning a language. This invention takes the language data selected by a learner or a default test base as the learning content and improves the learner's language ability through tests about the learning content. The learner is allowed to arbitrarily update the language data stored in a learning database. The system according to the present invention contains a grammar analysis engine. This engine analyzes the grammar of the language data in the learning database according to the grammatical rules collected and stored in a language grammar database, converts the language data in the learning database into test problems according to the problem models stored in a problem model database, and finally performs language tests using the grammar analysis processor and provides the test results (such as error analysis and explanation). This provides a language learning system that allows a learner to provide or update learning data and generates test problems accordingly.

A remote control includes a base and an insert that is attached in a detachable manner to the base. The base includes a remote control circuit, a button coupled to operate the remote control circuit and a fastener capable of holding the insert. The insert includes a printed publication (such as a card, a sheet of paper or a booklet) containing at least one leaf having human-understandable content (such as text and/or graphics). To assemble the remote control, a user attaches the insert to the fastener, so that the human-understandable content is laid over the button. Thereafter, when the user operates the button (e.g. by touching the leaf), the base transmits a remote control signal that causes a host device to visually display information related to the human-understandable content at the touched location. A base in the form of a three ring binder gives the user an intuitive feel of simply touching human-understandable content on a leaf in the binder to view a display of information related to the content. In addition to the human-understandable content, the insert can carry a predetermined pattern that can be sensed by a sensor during mounting of the insert on the base. The base transmits, in the remote control signal, a number determined from the redetermined pattern thereby to indicate to the host device the insert currently in the base.

An interactive system for teaching, entertaining, and habituating a child utilizes an interactive entity such as a doll, the doll having input and output elements and control circuitry adapted for driving the I/O elements, and a bi-directional communication link to a personal computer (PC). Scripted data stored at the computer directs doll activity and verbal articulation, and utilizes response from the child through the doll to the PC in directing output to the doll. The communication between the doll and the PC treats the doll as a peripheral device. In specific embodiments the interactive doll has servo-mechanisms for providing doll motion, such as eye and mouth and limb movement, which may be coordinated with verbalization in different scripts by commands retrieved at the computer and sent to the doll. In a preferred embodiment environments and applications are provided on CD-ROM disks which may also provide the operating application for the interactive doll system. Systems may be adapted for a broad range of functionality, such as acquaintance of a child with foreign languages, story telling, indirect interaction between an adult and a child through the medium of the doll, and much more.
