摘要： A reel servosystem for a digital magnetic tape transport responds to tape loop length signals from two spaced-apart linear sensors in a vacuum chamber and digital signals representing tape direction on either side of the tape loop formed by the chamber to control a reel motor independent of a capstan motor. The digital signals and sensor signals are combined in a logic network to introduce selective reel drive braking when the tape loop is somewhere between the sensors and the reel drive is moving opposite the capstan drive. The linear sensors otherwise generate analog signals to control loop length in proportional fashion, to maintain the loop at selected reference positions within the vacuum chamber dependent on direction.

摘要： A digital magnetic tape transport utilizes two vacuum storage chambers, a magnetic head and a capstan positioned along a straight-line tape-threading path between a supply reel and a takeup reel. The vacuum chambers are asymmetrically disposed with similar but differing inclinations to provide maximum chamber length as well as a sufficient wrap on the capstan to prevent slippage, while being confined within the outline of a standard mounting rack. Such an arrangement also decreases the number of tape guides while increasing tape stability, avoids frictional contact between the capstan and the oxide surface of the tape, and is particularly suited for automatic and cartridge loading.

摘要： In a single capstan two-vacuum chamber web transport, the web (tape) is vacuum urged into the chambers. The web has a tendency to slip over the capstan such that one chamber receives all of the tape to the exclusion of the other. This undesired action is prevented by providing fluid communication means extending between the two chambers with no other fluid communication connections. As the web enters one chamber, it is clamped to the fluid communication means by the vacuum applied through the other chamber. Movement of the web over the capstan is then inhibited, and the web loads into the other chamber. When the web is in both chambers, the fluid communication means is sealed off by the web making it inoperative.

摘要： A reel servosystem for a digital magnetic tape transport responds to tape loop length signals from two spaced-apart linear sensors in a vacuum chamber and a reel motor braking signal which is proportional to tape velocity at some point between the vacuum chamber and the associated tape reel. A Schmitt trigger increases the tape loop length signals by a selected amount whenever they exceed a threshold magnitude thereby providing a more rapid response and cancelling the effect of the braking signal. A summing junction provides a signal representing the sum of the tape loop length signals and the reel motor-braking signal to drive the reel motor. During steady state operation the reel motor drive signal is proportional to the length of the tape loop and maintains the tape loop at selected reference positions within the vacuum chamber dependent on direction.

摘要： A magnetic storage system for processing record members permanently affixed to storage containers. The system includes a processing chamber including a drive capstan positioned between a pair of storage bins or columns. A container having an elongated flexible record member stored therein with both ends permanently affixed thereto is positioned adjacent the chamber. Means are provided for drawing the portion of the record member between the fixed ends into the chamber and over the drive capstan. This tape portion is then driven back and forth between the storage columns and past a transducer so that information can be written on and read from the member. At the termination of a processing operation, the tape is returned to the storage container and the container is removed.
