This invention is for incrementally controlling energizing and de-energizing of at least two electrical motors in which motor armatures are mechanically coupled to a single mechanical member and in which motor stators are mechanically referenced to a second mechanical member. By energizing and deenergizing two or more electric motors of different force and torque capability coupled in this manner it is possible to provide increments of force and torque as small as the incremental capability of the smallest motor and to provide a large number of force and torque increments which can approximate a smooth control of force and torque in forward and reverse directions. The type of motor used for this invention is a multiple-two-node-open-circuit-armature-winding motor as disclosed in the referenced patents. This type of motor offers various levels of energizing the motor to the full force and torque capability.

A drive control system for driving an electrically driven window or sun roof is disclosed. A control unit drives a vehicle mounted device until it reaches a limit position when an ignition key is not inserted and when a door of the vehicle closes. Accordingly, a usual operation by a driver of the vehicle which occurs when he stops and gets out of the vehicle involves stopping the engine, withdrawing the ignition key, opening the door to get out of the vehicle, and closing the door. When it is desired to leave the window or sun roof in a half-open condition in order to prevent the parked car from overheating, the control unit stores any drive of a vehicle mounted device in response to an input when the ignition key is not inserted into the receptacle of the ignition switch, and controllably drives the vehicle mounted device until it reaches a limit position in response to a combination of the absence of the ignition key inserted into the receptacle, a closing of the door and the absence of stored information. Also an alarm unit is provided in combination with means which energizes the alarm unit whenever an induced current through a motor of a drive mechanism, when it is not energized, exceeds a given value. In this manner, an alarm is produced when a side window or sun roof is tampered open while the vehicle is parked.

In a system having a plurality of electric motors which are rated at different voltages, a voltage control circuit enables the electric motors to be connected to a common power supply. The voltage control circuit determines a first voltage appearing between the positive bus of the power supply and the motor and a second voltage appearing between the negative bus and the motor. One voltage is inverted and then summed with the non-inverted voltage to provide an average voltage. The average voltage is compared to a reference voltage and when the average voltage exceeds the reference voltage, a limit signal is generated. The limit signal is used to prevent higher voltages from being applied across the motor.

The speed control circuit detects an actual and selected speed for the wheelchair and supplies power to the wheelchair motors in a manner which tends to bring the actual and selected speeds into conformity. A reference signal circuit detects a speed and direction selected by a joystick and produces a reference signal whose magnitude varies with the selected speed. The reference circuit includes a polarity circuit which detects the polarity of the reference signal to determine whether the motors are to be rotated in a forward or reverse direction. The voltage and current across the armature of the motor are both detected as measures of its actual speed. A comparing circuit compares the actual speed as determined by the armature voltage and current with the selected speed as denoted by their reference signal. Specifically, it subtractively combines the armature voltage and the reference signal to produce a first difference signal. Further, it subtractively combines the first difference signal with the armature current signal to produce a speed error reference signal. The speed error reference signal controls a variable power regulator which varies the amount of power supplied to the motor in a manner which tends to cause the actual and selected speeds to match.

A tape drive including a drive motor; a take-up reel driven thereby; and a motor speed control system controlling the angular velocity of the drive motor for maintaining a substantially constant linear velocity of the tape as it is wound on the take-up reel, said control system comprising: a turns-counter counting the turns of tape as each is applied to the take-up reel; a presettable register; presetting means for presetting a predetermined number in said register at the beginning of a tape drive operation when the take-up reel is empty of tape; means for decrementing the register at a rate, with respect to the rate of application of turns onto the take-up reel, which is initially large during the application of a first predetermined number of turns, and which is subsequently reduced during the application of subsequent turns, to cause the contents of the presettable register to decrease in a non-linear manner with respect to the rate of increase in the number of turns applied to the take-up reel to approximate the non-linear relationship between the angular velocity of the drive motor and the diameter of tape on the take-up reel required to produce a substantially constant linear tape velocity; and motor control means controlling the angular velocity of the drive motor in accordance with the contents of the presettable register.

An electric drive comprising at least two gate-controlled electric motors, each of said motors comprising a synchronous machine having a rotor position sensor mounted on the shaft thereof, gate switching means provided with gate switch on and off control circuits, the output of said switching means being connected to armature winding sections of the synchronous machine, according to the invention, characterized in that said gate switch on control circuits of each of said gate switching means are connected to one output of the rotor position sensor of each subsequent synchronous machine thereby forming a ring circuit. This invention may find its use in the fields where stringent requirements are imposed upon synchronization of the electric drives.
