摘要： A footwear fitting system employs a set of sample footwear items, e.g., shoes, provided in small increments of length and width. The sample shoes are tried on by the wearer and the one providing the best fit is chosen. Then, a fit component of a stock shoe is re-formed with a molding apparatus to provide a size and width identical to the selected sample shoe. A shoe store need only stock a relatively small number of standard size shoes in order to provide the wearer with a close "custom" fit. The footwear interior is re-formed by mounting the footwear on a last having a length and width corresponding to that of the selected sample shoe. The last is heated to the softening temperature of a moldable strip of material, e.g., ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), incorporated into the shoe upper, then allowed to cool, whereby the footwear interior shape and size is reformed to correspond to the last. In an alternative embodiment, the footwear item is a shoe insert, e.g., a shoe insole. In a similar manner, the wearer is fitted to one of a set of sample shoe inserts. Then a stock insert is re-formed by molding to correspond in size and shape to the sample shoe insert providing the desired fit characteristics.

摘要： A foot impression unit is provided with an array of gauging elements, a control mechanism for urging the gauging elements into contact with the undersurface of a person's foot to form an impression of the undersurface of the foot, a locking mechanism for releasably locking the gauging elements in place to retain that impression, and a sensing mechanism for scanning the gauging elements to produce digital signals indicative of the positions of the gauging elements. These digital signals are stored and processed by a computer to provide a stored data record serving as a digital representation of the impression of the undersurface of the foot. The computer may also be employed to provide stored additional information for modifying that data record to compensate for a perceived defect of the foot. In response to the stored data record and any stored additional information for modifying that data record, a shaping unit shapes an insert blank to form a custom-made shoe insert conforming to the undersurface of the foot and compensating for any perceived defect of the foot.

摘要： Custom molded foot beds position the feet in balanced positions. A balanced foot position represents a referenced neutral foot position compensated for an individual's particular lower body anatomy. The foot beds and the apparatus and method for making the foot beds produce a balanced position by applying forces to the foot. First forces move the foot toward the referenced neutral position by a first foam block located under the forefoot lateral column. A composite foam block produces a rolling force in the rear foot to move the subtalar joint toward alignment. Other forces provide anatomical compensation including forces that elevate the heel and cup fatty tissue around the heel. Other forces support the remainder of the foot in this balanced position.

The foot support transfers the force of walking uniformly over the surface of the foot from the points of metatarsal contact through the arch to the heel. A mold prepared to match the foot in relaxed configuration is used to cast a positive impression representing the relaxed surface of the bottom of the foot. The positive impression is leveled horizontally by a level across the high points, or contact points on the bottom of the foot. A casting is made, matching this horizontal level; when cured the casting forms the insert of the invention.

A flexible blank contoured to fit a person's foot is placed against the cap which is at the elevated temperature, and these two are placed against the plantar surface of the foot. A plastic bag is placed around the cap, the blank and the foot, and a blank is applied to conform the cap and the blank to the person's foot so as to make a custom fit orthotic. Upon cooling, the cap remains properly contoured relative to the plantar surface of the foot.
