    Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A non-coherent modulation configuration may be selected for a transmission of a set of data based on a radio frequency spectrum band used for the transmission. After selecting the non-coherent modulation configuration, the set of data may be modulated using a differential phase shift keying modulation technique. After selecting the non-coherent modulation configuration, a set of frequency-domain symbols may be generated from the set of modulated symbols using a discrete Fourier transform. The set of frequency-domain symbols may be mapped to a set of subcarriers, and a time-domain waveform may be generated from the mapped set of frequency-domain symbols, yielding a time-domain waveform. The time-domain waveform may be transmitted over the radio frequency band.

    Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A link quality characteristic may be determined for a channel having a set of channel characteristics. The determined link quality characteristic may be used to estimate the equivalent link quality characteristic for different demodulation reference signal configurations given the side information of the set of channel characteristics. A mapping defined per set of channel characteristics may be used to determine the estimated equivalent link quality characteristics from the determined link quality characteristic. A demodulation reference signal configuration may be selected based on the estimated equivalent link quality characteristics and a communication efficiency metric. The demodulation reference signal configuration that maximizes the communication efficiency metric may be selected. The selected demodulation reference signal may be signaled to a device that transmits demodulation reference signals.

    Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A transmitting device such as a base station and a user equipment (UE), may segment a set of bits within a transport block into a first subset of bits including modulation bits and a second subset of bits including index modulation bits. The transmitting device may map the first subset of bits to a first set of subcarriers, the second subset of bits to a second set of subcarriers, and an additional set of bits to a third set of subcarriers. The transmitting device may generate a signal according to a boosting factor based on mapping the first subset of bits, the second subset of bits, and the additional set of bits, and transmit the generated signal to a receiving device.

    Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A user equipment (UE) may receive pilot signaling associated with inphase and quadrature (IQ) mismatch estimation for a set of antennas of a base station. The UE may measure pilot signals for each of the set of antennas based on a pilot signal pattern of the pilot signaling, and calculate an estimation of an IQ mismatch for each antenna of the set of antennas of the base station based on measuring the pilot signals. The base station may receive, from the UE, a report including an indication of the estimation of the IQ mismatch for each antenna of the set of antennas of the base station based on the pilot signals.

    Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A user equipment (UE) may measure a beam quality metric associated with a reference signal for each candidate beam of a plurality of candidate beams. The UE may determine a set of channel characteristics for each candidate beam of the plurality of candidate beams, where the set of channel characteristics indicates to the UE a level of channel equalization by the UE associated with processing signaling on each candidate beam of the plurality of candidate beams. In some cases, the set of channel characteristics may include a frequency selectiveness of a channel for each candidate beam of the plurality of candidate beams. The UE may select a candidate beam from the plurality of candidate beams based on the beam quality metric and the set of channel characteristics and communicate with a base station using the selected candidate beam.

    Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. One or more UEs communicating over sidelink may indicate transmit and receive categories to other UEs. A first UE may receive, in a sidelink communication message, an indication of a receive category of a second wireless device. The first UE may then transmit a shared sidelink channel message to the second wireless device based on the receive category of the second wireless device. In another case, a first UE may receive, in a sidelink communication message, an indication of a transmit category of a second wireless device. The first wireless device may then compare the transmit category of the second wireless device with a receive category of the first wireless device. The first wireless device may determine whether to decode a shared sidelink channel message from the second UE based on the comparing.
