摘要: An apparatus and method for implementing structure level pointers in a data storage system are provided. With the apparatus and method, a compound pointer system is provided in which fixed level pointers are augmented with associated pointers to metadata describing lower level structures. The companion metadata describes these lower level structures in a manner independent of the actual data stored within the lower level structures. With such an enhanced compound pointer system, an instant copy mechanism can process the pointers to the underlying structures and take instant copies of much finer detail. This allows individual records of data to be represented by the pointer system without having the overhead of carrying a pointer to all the individual records. The instant copy mechanism not only copies the fixed level pointers, but resolves the companion pointers to individual subsets of a general granularity for the instances of the instant copy domains.

摘要: In a magnetic recording device, a system and method for correcting errors in decoding a read data input signal. The system and method include multiple decoding channels, each channel processing the read data input signal and generating an output signal, where the output signal includes a data signal when no error is detected, and an error detection code when an error is detected. The system and method also include multiple error correction code (ECC) decoders, each decoder associated with and receiving the output signal of one of the channels and generating a corrected data signal when the received output signal is an error detection code and the error is correctable. The system and method further include a controller for selecting from the decoders one of the corrected data signals.

摘要: A data processing system for transferring data from a first plurality of data links to a second plurality of data links is provided. A data bridge is initialized. The data bridge is functionally connected on a first end to the first plurality of data links and on a second end to the second plurality of data links. A determination is made if a first data link within the first plurality of data links and a second data link within the second plurality of data links initiate a login parameter. Data is automatically transferred from a source data link within the first plurality of data links to a target data link within the second plurality of data links based on the login parameter.

摘要: A method for gripping objects by means of a robotic gripper mechanism is provided, wherein the gripping mechanism comprises gripping jaws, a wedge actuator between the gripping jaws, wherein the wedge actuator moves the gripping jaws together and apart as it slides backward and forward, and a motor that moves the wedge actuator by means of a connecting leadscrew. The method comprises applying current to the motor so that the motor reaches maximum operating speed before the gripper mechanism comes into contact with any object. When the gripping jaws contact an object, e.g., media cartridge, they collapse over the object, gripping it. The inertia from the rotating mass of the motor increases the force and speed of the gripping action. In another embodiment, a flywheel may be added to the leadscrew to provide additional rotating mass and increase the inertia before contact.

摘要: Electronic mail is archived and retrieved based on metadata generated by the client sending the electronic mail. The metadata is generated based on variable metadata generation policies distributed to each client. The metadata generation policies are executed in each client in conjunction with each electronic mail sent from the client. The electronic mail is received in a mail server on route to at least one addressee of the electronic mail. The received electronic mail is processed based on the metadata attached to the received electronic mail.

摘要: The present invention provides removable-unit storage modules, which can be combined into a network. The storage modules comprise storage cells arranged in a rule based structured configuration, and robotic hands to which move along tracks in order to retrieve objects from the storage cells. In one embodiment, the storage cells are used to contain data storage units. Several modules can be combined into a network by means of bridge tracks which connect the tracks of different modules, allowing the robotic hands to move between modules. The bridge tracks can be dynamically connected and disconnected from the modules, allowing the network configuration to change according to user needs. The individual modules are mobile and can be transported to other locations and connected with other removable-unit storage networks.

摘要: The invention provides a system for information lifecycle management of storage data on a storage network architecture. The system provides for bi-directional data transfer between an information lifecycle management controller, a host file system storage area network and an information lifecycle management storage area network. The information lifecycle management controller helps manage the data storage file transfers between the subsystems of the host file system storage area network and information lifecycle management storage area network. The method provides an information lifecycle management shim program, which resides in the host computer of the host file system storage area network, for hostless information lifecycle management of the data storage files. The system further provides a user-defined information lifecycle management of the migration, replication, copying, and backing up of the storage data files.
