摘要: A cabled communication link for a drill string includes spaced apart adapter subs within the drill string and a cable connecting the adapter subs for communication of a signal therebetween. The cabled communication link may be drill pipe joints are interconnected within the drill string between adapter subs to form a piped communication link, whereby the cabled communication link establishes a pathway to the piped communication link for transmitting a signal through the drill string. The cabled communication link may also be in a non-wired section of the drill string is disposed between adapter subs, whereby the cabled communication link establishes a pathway for transmitting a signal through the non-wired section of the drill string. Inductive couplings are preferably used for communication across the adapter subs and wired drill pipe joints. Another aspect of the cabled communication employs wireless transceivers at or near the surface of the wellbore.

摘要: The invention is, in its various aspects, a method and apparatus useful for strapdown inertial navigation and surveying in a borehole. The method comprises maneuvering a probe including three vibrating mass, Coriolis effect gyroscopes in a borehole and initializing the probe's attitude in the borehole within the probe's frame of reference. Three orthogonal, incremental rotation angles and three orthogonal, incremental velocities are determined for the probe within the probe's frame of reference. The incremental rotation angles are determined from the gyroscopes. The method then translates the three incremental velocities from the probe's frame of reference into the inertial frame of reference using the three incremental rotation angles. Next, a velocity vector in a local-vertical, wander-azimuth frame of reference is determined from the translated incremental velocities. A velocity error observation is then obtained. A system error is then estimated from the velocity vector and the velocity error observation. The system error is then fed back into the inertial navigation system for use in refining the method. In as second aspect, the invention is a strapdown, inertial measurement unit. The inertial measurement unit includes a housing, three accelerometers, and three vibrating mass, Coriolis effect gyroscopes. The three accelerometers are mounted within the housing. 摘要: A measurement while drilling nuclear tool adapted to be coupled in the drill string to make formation evaluations and methods of using are described. A neutron source is positioned on the cylindrical axis of the tool while a connected gamma ray source is eccentered against an interior side of the cylindrical tool. Both sources can be axially removed from the tool along its interior. Novel source-detector configurations are provided in order to accommodate the constraints of the MWD environment. Gamma ray transparent windows are provided through both the drill collar and an external fluid excluder (stabilizer) at the positions of the gamma ray source and scintillator detectors. Neutron detectors may be of two different types at the same spacing from the source. Corrections are made for microphonic noise that arises while drilling and for natural gamma ray background. A drilling fluid density determination is made and is utilized to compensate for "borehole" or "standoff" effects.
