    摘要: A downhole coring tool conveyable within a borehole extending into a subterranean formation, wherein the downhole coring tool comprises a housing, a hollow coring bit extendable from the housing, a first motor operable to rotate the coring bit, and a second motor operable to extend the coring bit into the subterranean formation through a sidewall of the borehole in a direction not substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the borehole proximate the downhole coring tool. A static sleeve disposed in but rotationally independent of the coring bit receives a portion of a core sample of the formation resulting from extension of the coring bit into the formation. The static sleeve comprises a protrusion extending radially inward toward the core sample sufficiently to mark the core sample.

    摘要: An apparatus and method are disclosed for actively cooling instrumentation, such as electronic circuits, in a downhole tool. This apparatus includes a compressor, condenser and expansion valve connected in circuit to an evaporator or heat exchanger. The evaporator/heat exchanger includes an inner container positioned about the instrumentation, and an outer chamber positioned about the inner container. A cooling fluid absorbs heat from the instrumentation as it passes through the inner container. The fluid then passes into the outer container where it may absorb heat from the wellbore. The heated fluid is then pressurized via the compressor, condensed into liquid via the condenser and selectively released back into the internal container upon cooling via the expansion valve. The fluid continuously circulates through the system whereby the instrumentation is insulated from heat and/or cooled.

    摘要: The present invention presents a method that effectively restores the real-time advantage of annular pressure while drilling (APWD) measurements taken during certain drilling operations that require the mud circulation pumps to be turned off (a “pumps-off” condition). APWD data, such as pressure measurements, is obtained from instruments and related electronics within the BHA. APWD data can be measured, stored and even processed in the BHA during a pumps-off condition for subsequent processing or communication of a reduced amount of data to the driller at the surface.

    摘要: A method and apparatus is disclosed for measuring motion signals of gyroscopes in downhole instruments used to determine the heading of a borehole. An illustrative embodiment of the invention includes a measuring-while-drilling system which may experience motion even while the drill string is suspended in rotary table slips when the heading of the drill string is being determined. Accelerometer and magnetometer data along three orthogonal axes of a measurement sub are used to obtain unit gravitational vectors g at a first time and at a second time and unit magnetic vectors h at the first time and the second time. The difference between the two unit gravitational vectors at the different times, .DELTA.g, and the difference between the two unit magnetic vectors at the different times, .DELTA.h, are used along with the unit vectors g and h and the difference in time .DELTA.t to determine the rotation vector of the probe .OMEGA..sup.p which has occurred during such time difference. The vector representing the rotation of the earth, .OMEGA..sup.e is then determined by subtracting .OMEGA..sup.p from the vector .OMEGA..sup.g from three gyroscope instruments placed along the axes of the measurement sub. The heading of the drill string is determined from the gravitational vector and the earth rotation vector.

Inductive couplings are preferably used for communication across the adapter subs and wired drill pipe joints. Another aspect of the cabled communication employs wireless transceivers at or near the surface of the wellbore.

    摘要: A method of forming a rotor for a positive displacement motor. The method includes forming a liner that includes at least two resilient layers and at least one fiber layer, and the at least two resilient layers are positioned so as to enclose the at least one fiber layer. The liner is positioned on a rotor tube, and the rotor tube includes a shaped outer surface including at least two radially outwardly projecting lobes extending helically along a selected length of the rotor tube. The liner is cured on the rotor tube so that the liner conforms to the radially outwardly projecting lobes formed on the outer surface and to the helical shape of the outer surface. The curing forms a bond between the liner and the outer surface and between the at least two resilient layers and the at least one fiber layer.
