    摘要: A system and method for enhancing the reception of electromagnetic (EM) waves in a fixed downhole receiver of an EM telemetry system is provided. In one embodiment, slots are formed in a portion of an outer casing and an EM receiver is positioned within the outer casing so as to be aligned with the slots formed therein. In another embodiment, an inductive coupling arrangement is provided to transfer signals from an EM receiver mounted on the outside surface of an outer casing to a wireline that is attached to the outer surface of an inner casing, which is disposed within the outer casing. In yet another embodiment, an insulated gap is formed in the surface of the outer casing. An EM receiver, mounted on the outer surface of the inner casing, is positioned above the insulated gap of the outer casing. An electrical coupling mechanism is further provided to electrically couple the inner and outer conductors at a point above the EM receiver.

    摘要: Methods and apparatus are disclosed for minimizing or eliminating an undesired axial electric current induced along a subsurface borehole in the process of subsurface measurements with transmitter and/or receiver antennas which are substantially time varying magnetic dipoles with their dipole moments aligned at an angle to the axis of the borehole. Some antennas are disposed within the borehole on instruments having a non-conductive support member. One instrument includes a conductive all-metal body with an antenna adapted for induction frequencies. Antenna shields adapted for controlled current flow are also provided with an all-metal instrument. Methods include providing an alternate path for the current along the instrument body. Another method includes emitting a controlled current to counter the undesired current. Another method corrects for the effect of the current using a superposition technique. An embodiment of the instrument includes an antenna disposed between a pair of electrically coupled electrodes. The antenna is disposed on the instrument such that it comprises a tilted or transverse magnetic dipole. Another embodiment of the instrument includes a non-conductive housing with a conductive segment disposed thereon. An antenna is disposed on the instrument about the conductive segment. Another embodiment includes an antenna disposed between two pairs of electrodes with a device to measure a voltage at the electrodes when electromagnetic energy is transmitted within the borehole. Yet another instrument includes an antenna disposed between a first pair of electrodes and a device to measure a voltage at the elecrodes when electromagnetic energy is transmitted within the borehole. This embodiment also includes a device to energize a second electrode pair in response to the voltage measured at the first electrode pair.

    摘要: Apparatus is disclosed for determining the resistivity of formations surrounding an earth borehole. An electrically conductive metal body, such as a drill collar on a drill string, is movable through the borehole. A transmitting toroidal coil antenna is disposed on the body and is energized to induce a current which travels in a path that includes the body and the formations. An electrode is disposed on the body, and an electrical signal resulting from said current is measured at the electrode to obtain an indication of the resistivity of the formations. In a disclosed embodiment, one or more electrodes can be mounted on a blade that is mechanically coupled to the body.

The electroquasistatic shield element comprises a sheet of conductive, non-magnetic material having a conductive center; a first annular band of narrow ray-like conductive segments, each of the conductive segments thereof integrally extending radially from the conductive center and being spaced from adjacent conductive segments by respective narrow radially-extending spaces originating in and traversing the first annular band; and preferably but not necessarily a second annular band of ray-like conductive segments, the conductive segments thereof integrally extending radially in pairs from a respective one of the conductive segment of the first annual band, and being spaced from adjacent pairs of conductive strips of the second annual band by respective longitudinal spaces originating in the first annular band and from one another by a narrow radially-extending space originating in and traversing the second annular band.
