[Class 46] [Also in Group XXVIII] A method of separating solids and other deleterious matter from fluids comprises successively passing the contaminated fluid in relatively small and well-defined streams through a cellulose filtering material and in an unobstructed flow over and in contact with but not through an adsorbent material. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a filter element for use in treating fuel oil and formed from a sheet 1 of cellulosic material which has been folded in accordion fashion, with strips 8 of adsorbent material interposed between alternate webs 5. The sheet is corrugated, forming channels on both sides of each strip 8. The strip comprises cellulosic fibre containing bauxite or other adsorbent which will remove acid impurities. The assembly is bent into tubular formation, the ends of the sheet being connected together. The upper and lower ends of the webs 5 are sealed by a compound 15. The element may be twisted into the form shown in Fig. 5 and maintained in this form. Fig. 5 shows an additional set of adsorbent strips, the liquid flowing inwardly being subjected first to adsorption by an outer set of strips &c., then to filtration through the webs 5c, and finally to adsorption by an inner set of strips &c.
