摘要:
The inventive optical fiber connector comprises a glass ferrule that is strengthened by etching of the outer surface of the ferrule, followed by deposition thereon of a protective layer. Exemplarily, the ferrule is a vitreous silica ferrule drawn from a preform that was made by a sol-gel process. The ferrule is etched in buffered HF, and the protective layer is electroless deposited Ni, with a thin layer of Au thereon. Significant strength increases, exceeding 200%, are obtainable, with the strength being relatively unchanged after even a severe abrasion test.

A connector for optical fibers includes a cylindrical glass ferrule installed in a plastic base member to form a fiber-holding structure. This structure includes a small passageway along its central axis for holding an optical fiber, and is mounted within a dielectric housing that includes an opening at one end thereof from which the glass ferrule protrudes. A cylindrical spring surrounds the base member and interacts with an interior surface of the housing to urge the glass ferrule outward from the opening in the housing. The housing further includes a spring latch which is located on a single side surface thereof, which is manually operable and used to lock the connector to an associated receptacle.

A bend-limiting apparatus 20 for attachment to an optical connector 10 has a generally cylindrical shape and includes an axial bore 28 along its central axis for holding an optical cable 30. The front end 22 of the bend-limiting apparatus attaches to the optical connector and has an outside diameter which is comparable in size to the connector. The back end of the bend-limiting apparatus has an outside diameter which is comparable in size to the optical cable. The bend-limiting apparatus is made from a flexible material which is sufficiently stiff to accommodate heavy side loads, but includes a number of grooves 23 that are exclusively positioned on its back half to accommodate light side loads. These grooves preferably extend from an outside surface 29 of the apparatus into the axial bore, and also extend in a circumferential direction at least part way around the apparatus. Such a design effectively limits the minimum bend radius of an optical cable over a wide range of side loads.

An alignment sleeve (66) for holding two conically shaped portions (30--30) of plugs (24--24) each of which terminates an optical fiber (25) includes two conically shaped cavities (68, 70) communicating through a common minimal diameter plane (72). After the sleeve has been molded, a tool (100) faced with an abrasive material is inserted into each cavity of the sleeve and turned rotatably while a force is applied in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the tool. This causes material to be removed from the walls defining the cavities so that when the two plugs are inserted into the cavities, the axes of the fibers will be aligned coaxially and the end faces of the fibers will have a predetermined separation. The apparatus of this invention also may be used to adjust a length measurement of plugs. This is accomplished by inserting a plug into a conically shaped cavity of a tool. A wall which defines the cavity of the tool is faced with an abrasive material which upon turning the plug abrades the plug to thereby increase the distance from a reference circumference of the plug to a pedestal (36) in which the free end of the optical fiber terminates.
