    Abstract: An end effector assembly includes a first jaw member having a first tissue contact surface and a second jaw member having a second tissue contact surface. The second jaw member is pivotally coupled to the first jaw member. The tissue contact surfaces may include raised steps that define an exhaust channel. A longitudinally extending knife slot may be defined in one or both of the tissue contact surfaces. One or more exhaust slots, which may be defined in one or both of the tissue contact surfaces, are in communication with the knife slot. The exhaust channel and the exhaust slots direct fluid away from the jaw members to minimize thermal damage risks associated with tissue sealing.

One or more exhaust slots (216), which may be defined in one or both of the tissue contact surfaces (122), are in communication with the knife slot (214).     Abstract: An articulating surgical instrument includes a distal retainer, a proximal shaft segment, a first articulating section extending between the distal retainer and the proximal shaft segment, a proximal base extending proximally from the proximal shaft segment, a proximal retainer, a second articulating section extending between the proximal base and proximal retainer. A plurality of articulation cables is secured at distal end portions thereof to the distal retainer and at proximal end portions thereof to the proximal retainer. The proximal shaft segment, first articulating section, proximal base, and second articulating section cooperate to define a central longitudinal lumen therethrough and a plurality of radial longitudinal lumens therethrough that are radially disposed about the central longitudinal lumen. The articulation cables extend through the radial longitudinal lumens. Articulation of the second articulating section affects articulation of the first articulating section.
