Abstract: A forceps is provided and includes a housing having a shaft. An end effector assembly operatively connects to a distal end of the shaft and includes a pair of first and second jaw members. One or both of the first and second jaw members is movable relative to the other jaw member from a clamping position to an open position. A resilient member operably couples to at least one of the first and second jaw members. The resilient member is configured to bias the first and second jaw members in the clamping position and provide a closure force on tissue disposed therebetween.

Abstract: An end effector assembly includes a first jaw member having a first tissue contact surface and a second jaw member having a second tissue contact surface. The second jaw member is pivotally coupled to the first jaw member. The tissue contact surfaces may include raised steps that define an exhaust channel. A longitudinally extending knife slot may be defined in one or both of the tissue contact surfaces. One or more exhaust slots, which may be defined in one or both of the tissue contact surfaces, are in communication with the knife slot. The exhaust channel and the exhaust slots direct fluid away from the jaw members to minimize thermal damage risks associated with tissue sealing.

The exhaust channel (124) and the exhaust slots (216) direct fluid away from the jaw members (114a, 114b) to minimize thermal damage risks associated with tissue sealing.

Abstract: A surgical system and a computing device for a surgical system that is configured to calculate actual operating parameters of an electrosurgical instrument, including an actual angle between the jaw members of the electrosurgical instrument, and to display a user interface. The user interface includes an ideal angle range between the jaw members and the actual angle between the jaw members of the electrosurgical instrument relative to the ideal angle range. The computing device is further configured to determine if the actual angle between the jaw members of the electrosurgical instrument is outside the ideal angle range.

Abstract: An articulating surgical instrument includes a distal retainer, a proximal shaft segment, a first articulating section extending between the distal retainer and the proximal shaft segment, a proximal base extending proximally from the proximal shaft segment, a proximal retainer, a second articulating section extending between the proximal base and proximal retainer. A plurality of articulation cables is secured at distal end portions thereof to the distal retainer and at proximal end portions thereof to the proximal retainer. The proximal shaft segment, first articulating section, proximal base, and second articulating section cooperate to define a central longitudinal lumen therethrough and a plurality of radial longitudinal lumens therethrough that are radially disposed about the central longitudinal lumen. The articulation cables extend through the radial longitudinal lumens. Articulation of the second articulating section affects articulation of the first articulating section.

Abstract: A method for manufacturing an end effector assembly includes providing first and second jaw members moveable relative to one another about a pivot between a first, spaced-apart position and a second, approximated position. One of the first and second jaw members includes a cavity defined therein and the other of the first and second jaw members includes a stop member configured to be inserted into the cavity. A gap-setting gauge is grasped between the first and second jaw members to define a gap-distance between the jaw members equivalent to a thickness of the gap-setting gauge. The first and second jaw members are set such that the jaw members are prevented from approximation beyond the gap-distance.
