Abstract: Methods, systems, and bitstream syntax are described for metadata signaling and film-grain parameter adaptation based on a viewing environment which may differ from a reference environment. Example adaptation models are provided for viewing parameters that include: ambient room illumination, viewing distance, and pixels per inch in a target display. Example systems include a single reference viewing environment model and a multi-reference viewing environment model supporting adaptation of film-grain model parameters via adaptation functions or interpolation.

Abstract: Methods are described to communicate source color volume information in a coded bitstream using SEI messaging. Such data include at least the minimum, maximum, and average luminance values in the source data plus optional data that may include the color volume x and y chromaticity coordinates for the input color primaries (e.g., red, green, and blue) of the source data, and the color x and y chromaticity coordinates for the color primaries corresponding to the minimum, average, and maximum luminance values in the source data. Messaging data signaling an active region in each picture may also be included.

Abstract: Methods and systems for reducing banding artifacts when displaying high-dynamic-range images reconstructed from coded reshaped images are described. Given an input image in a high dyna mic range (HDR) which is mapped to a second image in a second dynamic range, banding artifacts in a reconstructed HDR image generated using the second image are reduced by a) in darks and mid-tone regions of the input image, adding noise to the input image before being mapped to the second image, and b) in highlights regions of the input image, modifying an input backward reshaping function, wherein the modified backward reshaping function will be used by a decoder to map a decoded version of the second image to the reconstructed HDR image. An example noise generation technique using simulated film-grain noise is provided.

Abstract: Methods for quantization parameter (QP) prediction are presented. In a coded bitstream that includes QP values, instead of simply embedding all delta QP values in the bitstream, the bitstream may include QP-related syntax elements that allow a decoder to reconstruct the delta QP values using luma-based QP prediction. Encoding and decoding bitstream examples are provided where delta QP values may be predicted using information from just the luminance values of the prediction blocks of the current block or by additional luminance information from its known neighbors (e.g., from the left or above blocks) and a base QP value.
