    Abstract: According to one implementation, a dual-mode augmented reality and virtual reality viewer (AR/VR viewer) includes a device configured to provide AR and VR effects, the device including a display screen, a VR shield, and a transparency control unit coupled to the VR shield. The AR/VR viewer also includes a computing platform for generating the AR and VR effects communicatively coupled to the device. The display screen has a user facing first surface for receiving the AR and VR effects, and a second surface opposite the user facing first surface. The display screen or a transmissive layer adjoining the display screen is configured to have a variable transparency. The VR shield is configured to be one of substantially transparent in an AR mode and substantially opaque in a VR mode under the control of the transparency control unit.

    Abstract: In one implementation, a multi-mode haptic effects delivery system includes an impact surface, a mass adjacent to the impact surface, and a driving mechanism configured to reciprocate the mass. The multi-mode haptic effects delivery system also includes a motor configured to generate a vibrational mode haptic effect. The driving mechanism configured to reciprocate the mass causes the mass to strike the impact surface so as to generate a recoil mode haptic effect. In one implementation, the driving mechanism is a gear assembly powered by the same motor used to generate the vibrational mode haptic effect.

    Abstract: According to one implementation, an image display system includes a computing platform having a hardware processor and a system memory storing a software code, a display coupled to the computing platform, and a visual filter and at least partially surrounding the display and having an opaque mode and a transparent mode. The hardware processor executes the software code to set the visual filter to the opaque mode to obscure the display. The hardware processor also executes the software code to generate a visual image using the display, to obtain an operating parameter of the image display system corresponding to a status of the display, and to detect that the operating parameter meets a predetermined criterion. In response to detecting that the operating parameter meets the predetermined criterion, the hardware processor further executes the software code to set the visual filter to the transparent mode to make the display visible.

    Abstract: This disclosure presents systems and methods to synchronize visual effects and haptic feedback for interactive experiences. Visual circuit control signals may dictate control of a presentation device to present images forming virtual content. Haptic circuit control signals may dictate control of a haptic feedback device to provide haptic output. Timing information conveying one or both of latency in the execution of the visual circuit control signals by the presentation device and/or latency in the execution of the haptic circuit control signals by the haptic feedback device may be determined. Based on the timing information, transmission of the visual circuit control signals to the presentation device and/or transmission of the haptic circuit control signals to the haptic feedback device may be effectuated so that the presentation of images and provision of haptic output occur within a threshold time span.

    Abstract: An augmented reality (AR) system for providing an AR experience to a user of an AR venue includes a hardware processor, a memory, a light detector, a display, and an AR application stored in the memory. The hardware processor can execute the AR application to provide a virtual environment corresponding to the AR venue on the display, and to detect a light event resulting from interaction of an infrared (IR) light produced by an AR accessory utilized by the user with a surface within the AR venue. The hardware processor can further execute the AR application to identify a location of the light event within the AR venue, determine whether the location of the light event is within an activation zone of the AR venue, and render a visual effect corresponding to the light event on the display if the location is within the activation zone.
