    Abstract: A hand held appliance, such as a hairdryer, includes a body having a fluid inlet for admitting fluid into the appliance, a fluid outlet, a duct lined with a material, and a primary fluid flow path extending from the fluid inlet to the fluid outlet and through the duct. The material may be a foam or a felt and is a sound absorbing material, a vibration absorbing material, is an insulator, is tuned to resonant frequencies of the appliance. The primary fluid flow path may be non-linear. The duct may have a non-circular cross-section and may comprise a handle portion of the appliance, and the handle portion of the duct is lined with said material. A fan unit may be provided located upstream of the handle portion. The duct may comprise a first handle portion and a second handle portion of the appliance.

    Abstract: A cleaning appliance of the cylinder type comprises a separating apparatus for separating dirt from a dirt-bearing fluid flow, and a floor-engaging rolling assembly. The separating apparatus comprises a first cyclonic separation unit having a low efficiency cyclone and a second cyclonic separation unit having a plurality of second cyclones. The rolling assembly comprises a main body and a pair of floor-engaging wheels. The main body comprises a recess in which the separating apparatus is received such that when the cleaning appliance is viewed from either side at least one fifth of the width of the low efficiency cyclone is hidden from view by a portion of the rolling assembly at the point of maximum depth of the recess.

    Abstract: A hand held appliance comprising a body and a handle connected to the body, wherein the body comprises a tubular inner wall, an outer wall extending about the inner wall, a fluid flow path extending between the inner wall and the outlet wall, and a barrier extending at least partially across the inner wall. The barrier may be located at one end of the inner wall and may be formed from transparent material. A space defined by the inner wall of the body may provide line of sight through the body. A fan unit may be located between the inner wall and the outer wall and may be supported by a bearing mounted on the inner wall. The barrier may be connected to the fan unit for rotation therewith. A motor for driving the fan unit and a heater may be located between the inner wall and the outer wall.
