Methods and apparatus for measuring viscosity and/or surface tension of a liquid are described in which droplets are formed at a needle or pipette containing a sample of the test liquid and a size-related characteristic of the droplets such as droplet size, volume, diameter, or weight of the test liquid are measured by means of by capturing an image of the droplets and obtaining the size-related characteristic from the captured image. Subsequently or previously, a volume of the same sample of the test liquid is drained from the needle or pipette under pump pressure or a hydrostatic pressure, and an elution time is measured. The method and apparatus allows or includes determining the viscosity from the elution time, and determining the surface tension from the viscosity and the size-related characteristic of the droplet such as droplet size, volume, diameter, or weight of the test liquid.

A Direct Electrostatic Printing (DEP) device is provided that includes a back electrode (105), a printhead structure having an insulating substrate (102), a control electrode (102a) and a slit aperture (103) through which a particle flow can be electrically modulated by the control electrode (102a), and a toner delivery means (101), in which control electrodes (102a) are present only on one side of the slit aperture. In a preferred embodiment the printhead structure is realized by a slit having two sides, side A (SA) and side B (SB), defined by two edges (A and B), which are formed by at least one sheet of insulating material. The insulating material has an elasticity modulus (Young's Modulus, YM) fulfilling the equation 0.1 GPa.ltoreq.YM.ltoreq.10 GPa and the edges A and B are placed with respect to each other at an angle .alpha. fulfilling the equation 0.degree..ltoreq..alpha.

A device for use in the technique of direct electrostatic printing (DEP) images onto an intermediate or final substrate. The direct electrostatic printing device includes a receiving member support and a printhead structure which has shield electrodes on a first side and control electrodes on a second side, and which also has apertures therethrough. There is one shield electrode and one control electrode for each aperture. The direct electrostatic printing device also includes a toner delivery mechanism which provides a cloud of toner particles in the vicinity of the apertures. The printhead structure is made of a plastic isolating substrate. The voltage applied to the individual control electrodes is varied according to the contents of the image being printed. A correction voltage is applied to each individual shield electrode and is tuned according to the characteristics of the particular aperture which corresponds to that shield electrode. The values corresponding to the correction voltages for each shield electrode can be stored in a look up table, which will be unique for each printhead structure.

The size or diameter of the apertures of one row is substantially different from the size of the apertures of a second row. This arrangement allows a high quality reproduction of continuous tone images, along with crisp graphics and characters by one single printing pass.

Disclosed herein is a method for direct electrostatic printing with reduced banding, which comprising the steps of creating a potential difference between a back electrode and a magnetic brush assembly having a stationary mounted core and a sleeve rotatably mounted around the core, and rotating the sleeve at a rotational speed V.sub.rot which is higher than 100 rotations per minute; applying a developer with toner particles and magnetically attractable carrier particles on the magnetic brush assembly; creating a flow of toner particles directly from the magnetic brush assembly to the back electrode; interposing a printhead structure, having printing apertures and control electrodes around the printing apertures, between the magnetic brush assembly and the back electrode, for image wise controlling the flow of toner particles; passing a substrate at a speed V.sub.sub being equal to or larger than 10 cm/min between the printhead structure and the back electrode; image wise depositing toner particles on the substrate through the printing apertures; and fixing the toner particles to the substrate.
