The present invention relates to ultrafine fiber-based composites comprising at least one ultrafine fiber-type hydrophobic polymer and oxide moisture absorbent particles distributed on the polymer. The ultrafine fiber-based composites may be appropriately used as sealing materials which can prevent the functional deterioration of electric or electronic devices and enhance the stability due to their high hydroscopicity and ability to maintain their appearance without change after the absorption of moisture.

A cyclometalated transition metal complex emitting phosphorescence of high efficiency and an organic electroluminescent display device employing the same are provided. The cyclometalated transition metal complex is represented by Formula I: {[C ^N]mM[P(R1R2)][LR3R4]n}z (I). The cyclometalated transition metal complex can be employed in an organic film of an organic electroluminescent display device, can emit light at a wavelength range of 400 nm to 650 nm, and can emit white light as well when used with a green light emitting material and a red light emitting material.

An image is formed by a process comprising the steps of: preparing a substrate comprising a transparent substrate having formed thereon a transparent electroconductive film and a semiconductor thin film in this order; preparing in a vessel, which can hold an liquid, an aqueous liquid containing a coloring material and an electrodepositable material capable of chemically dissolving or sedimanting/precipitating depending on the change in the pH; connecting a device than can supply an electric current or an electric field in accordance with an image pattern to the transparent electroconductive film of the substrate; fixing the substrate so that the semiconductor thin film is immersed in the aqueous liquid; disposing a counter electrode as another member of an electrode pair in the vessel; disposing a prescribed photomask on the transparent substrate of the substrate; and carrying out light irradiation at the transparent substrate through the photomask so that an electrodeposited film containing the electrodepositable material is formed selectively on portions where electromotive force is generated by the light irradiation.

A method for manufacturing a color filter having a high resolution and excellent controllability, in few steps without using a photolithographic process is disclosed. The method includes: preparing a substrate produced by sequentially forming a transparent electroconductive film and a semiconductor film on a transparent substrate; preparing a water-based liquid in a vessel, the water based liquid containing a coloring material and an electrodeposition material which is chemically dissolved or precipitated/sedimented by changes in the pH; securing the substrate having the transparent electroconductive film, to which means for supplying a current or an electric field according to an image pattern is connected, such that the semiconductor thin film is dipped in the water-based liquid; disposing a counter electrode in the vessel and disposing a mask pattern on the transparent substrate and applying light to selectively precipitate an electrodeposition film, which includes electrodeposition materials, on a portion at which electromotive force was generated with light irradiation, thereby forming a monochromatic color filter. A plurality of coloring materials, which each have a different hue, can be used and the steps for forming a monochromatic color filter can be repeated for each material having a different hue to form a polychromatic color filter.

The present invention provides a novel chemical substance for practical organic nonlinear optical element having a great nonlinear optical effect, an excellent chemical and thermal stability and transparency which can easily undergo crystalline growth from a liquid phase or melt phase and can be easily worked, a process for the preparation thereof, and a nonlinear optical element prepared from such a material. A novel cyclobutenedione derivative prepared in accordance with the following reaction formula, a process for the preparation thereof, and a nonlinear optical element comprising such a derivative are provided: ##STR1## wherein X.sup.1 represents a halogen atom; X.sup.2, X.sup.3, X.sup.4 and X.sup.5 each represent a hydrogen atom or a halogen atom; and R represents a substituent represented by the following formula: ##STR2## wherein C* represents an asymmetric carbon atom.
