In an optical wavelength converting apparatus, a fundamental wave impinges upon a crystal of a nonlinear optical material, the type II of phase matching between the fundamental wave and its second harmonic is effected, and the second harmonic of the fundamental wave is thereby radiated out of the optical wavelength converting apparatus. Two crystals constituted of the same material are employed as the crystal. The two crystals have equal lengths and are located in orientations such that corresponding optic axes may be shifted 90.degree. from each other. The optical wavelength converting apparatus yields the second harmonic having the maximum possible output power and yet can be kept small in size and low in cost.

The exit end of the cladding is either of a conical shape, or supports a grating composed of concentric patterns which convert the conical wavefront of the wavelength-converted wave into a plane or spherical wavefront. Alternatively, the optical wavelength converter module comprises a fiber Cherenkov type optical converter device and an optical device, such as a lens or grating device, which convert the conical wavefront of the wavelength-converted wave into a plane or spherical wavefront.

A radiation image read-out apparatus comprises two or more photodetectors positioned side by side along a scanning line for detecting light emitted by a stimulable phosphor sheet carrying a radiation image stored therein when it is exposed to stimulating rays. Turning on and off of the photodetectors is controlled in accordance with the movement of a scanning point so that at least the photodetector farthest from the scanning point at any given instant is turned off, and at least the photodetector nearest the scanning point is turned on.
