Abstract:
A method and apparatus utilizing historical network information for mitigating excessive network updates when performing channel selection between a serving base transceiver station and an adjacent base transceiver station when determined channel selection would result in either a Location Area Update (LAU) or a Routing Area Update (RAU) is presented. If a network update, either LAU or RAU, is the first occurrence, network identification information for the LA or RA is stored and an incremental value indicating occurrence is set; else in the case occurrence is not the first, the incremental value is incremented. A first margin value is then selected if the incremented value does not meet or exceed a predetermined value, or a second margin value is selected if the incremented value does meet or exceed a predetermined value. The signal level of the adjacent base transceiver station is then compared to the reference signal level of the serving base transceiver station plus the selected margin value in order to determine channel selection.
Abstract:
Adaptive acknowledgement delay entails adaptively adjusting an acknowledgement delay period responsive to channel quality. A destination device is enabled to set the acknowledgment delay period between two successive acknowledgments that acknowledge blocks received from a source device over a wireless channel. In a described implementation, the acknowledgment delay period is decreased if the wireless channel quality is poor. Otherwise, the acknowledgment delay period is increased as bounded by a maximum acknowledgment delay period setting and a remaining number of unreceived blocks of a current suprablock. The quality of the wireless channel may be reflected by, for example, blocks that are received erroneously. The duration of the acknowledgment delay may be set in terms of number of blocks received at the destination device.
Abstract:
Disclosed are methods that enable communications to be established regardless of the presence of communications blockers, e.g., firewalls and NATs, in the path between two computing devices. Two devices each establish communications with a rendezvous service. Through the service, the devices signal each other to set up direct, peer-to-peer communications between themselves. If the devices fail to establish direct communications, then they invoke a relay service that provides the illusion of direct communications. In another aspect, an originating device attempts to establish communications with a recipient, using an address and port number associated with the recipient. If that attempts fails, possibly because a firewall is blocking communications, then the originating device retries using a port normally held open by firewalls. If this attempt also fails, then the originating device invokes the services of a proxy to negotiate a port acceptable for use by the recipient and by any intervening firewalls.
Abstract:
A preconnectorized outdoor cable streamlines the deployment of optical waveguides into the last mile of a optical network. The preconnectorized outdoor cable includes a cable and at least one plug connector. The plug connector is attached to a first end of the cable, thereby connectorizing at least one optical waveguide. The cable has at least one optical waveguide, at least one tensile element, and a cable jacket. Various cable designs such as figure-eight or flat cables may be used with the plug connector. In preferred embodiments, the plug connector includes a crimp assembly having a crimp housing and a crimp band. The crimp housing has two half-shells being held together by the crimp band for securing the at least one tensile element. When fully assembled, the crimp housing fits into a shroud of the preconnectorized cable. The shroud aides in mating the preconnectorized cable with a complimentary receptacle.
Abstract:
A one-piece fiber optic receptacle is provided for aligning and optically connecting a plug ferrule with a back-side ferrule of like configuration. The fiber optic receptacle includes a receptacle housing defining an internal cavity opening through an external end and an opposed internal end, an alignment sleeve disposed within the internal cavity and received within the internal end of the receptacle housing, and a sleeve retainer secured to the internal end of the receptacle housing and operable for providing access to the alignment sleeve from the internal end of the receptacle housing. The alignment sleeve includes a chamfer for guiding the back-side ferrule into the alignment sleeve. The sleeve retainer has an opening and a plurality of alignment ribs disposed about the opening for permitting angular rotation of the alignment sleeve relative to the sleeve retainer during insertion of the plug ferrule and the back-side ferrule into the alignment sleeve.

The fiber optic receptacle includes a receptacle housing defining an internal cavity opening through an external end and an opposed internal end, an alignment sleeve disposed within the internal cavity and received within the internal end of the receptacle housing, and a sleeve retainer removably secured to the internal end of the receptacle housing and operable for providing access to the alignment sleeve from the internal end of the receptacle housing. The fiber optic receptacle further includes biasing member supports that facilitate loading and ensure alignment of at least one biasing member during assembly and use. Tapered posts may be provided on at least one of the alignment sleeve and the sleeve retainer for retaining and guiding the at least one biasing member during assembly and use.

Abstract:
Systems and methods create high quality audio-centric, image-centric, and integrated audio-visual summaries by seamlessly integrating image, audio, and text features extracted from input video. Integrated summarization may be employed when strict synchronization of audio and image content is not required. Video programming which requires synchronization of the audio content and the image content may be summarized using either an audio-centric or an image-centric approach. Both a machine learning-based approach and an alternative, heuristics-based approach are disclosed. Numerous probabilistic methods may be employed with the machine learning-based learning approach, such as naïve Bayes, decision tree, neural networks, and maximum entropy. To create an integrated audio-visual summary using the alternative, heuristics-based approach, a maximum-bipartite-matching approach is disclosed by way of example.
