The housing includes a stationary helical flight and a seal guard which fits within the ground roller. The stationary sleeve bearing is protected on either end from dirt and debris getting between the inside surface of the stationary sleeve bearing and the outside surface of the mounting shafts on either end of the ground roller.

A user interface and control system for adjusting the reel of a cutting reel unit includes a frame supported by at least one support element that is supported on, and is movable along, the ground. The system also includes a cutting reel, a bedknife, first and second actuators, a controller, and an operator input station, all carried on the frame. The reel and bedknife define a cutting line therebetween. The first actuator is adjustable to set a clearance between the reel and the bedknife. The second actuator is operatively connected between the frame and the bedknife to adjust the elevation of the cutting line to set a height-of-cut of the cutting reel. The operator input station is signal-connected to the controller, the operator input station including a keypad portion and a display portion, wherein the clearance and the height-of-cut are indicated on the display portion and the clearance and the height-of-cut can be selectively changed via the controller by operator input to the keypad portion.

The height-of-cut adjusting system includes a first frame; a second frame; a cutting reel supported by the second frame; a bedknife arranged adjacent to the cutting reel and supported by the second frame; at least one support element arranged to translate along the ground and arranged to support the first frame; and at least one first actuator connected between the first frame and the second frame and arranged to adjust the relative elevation of the second frame with respect to the first frame. The reel-to-bedknife clearance adjusting system includes at least one second actuator operatively connected between the reel and the second frame and a sound detector. The reel mower cutting unit may be manual or self-adjusting. In the manual mode, adjustments can be made by engaging and turning an adjustment actuator on the side of the cutting reel with a hand tool such as a socket wrench. In the self-adjustment mode, adjustments can be made by engaging and turning adjustment actuators with an output shaft of an electric motor. The same adjustment actuators are used in both adjustment modes, and the reel cutting unit may be converted between modes by fastening or unfastening electric motor assembly from the unit.

When properly positioned the shouldered pin engages the cutter bar of the mower and the dial indicator is easily viewable from above the mower without significantly raising the mower or removing the cutting unit from the mower.

A semi-rigid bar is placed between the rear fixed roller and the front adjustable roller of the mower and locked into place with a height adjusting screw which is set to a selected height-of-cut and releasably attached to the bed knife intermediate the front and rear rollers. A rigid bar is secured at the rear-end of the semi rigid bar and extends forwardly past the front roller. A spring loaded dial indicator is mounted at the forward end of the rigid bar and contacts the semi rigid bar so as to provide a reading of deflection of the semi rigid bar as the front roller is adjusted.

An apparatus for precision measurements of the clearance between the blades of a lawn mower and the ground. The apparatus includes a groomer gage and bed knife gage mounted on a plate and adapted to be positioned against the rollers of a mower during the taking of measurements. The plate, when positioned against the rollers simulates the position of the ground. The gages on the plate are positioned on the plate in a manner allowing the respective shafts of the groomer gage and bed knife gage to contact the groomer member and bed knife, respectively. The distance the respective shafts are displaced to cause contact with the groomer member and the bed knife corresponds to the ground clearance of the groomer member and the bed knife, respectively. The respective distances corresponding to the ground clearance of the groomer member and the bed knife are displayed by the groomer gage and the bed knife gage, respectively. The simultaneous measurement of the ground clearance of the groomer member and the bed knife facilitates the adjustment of the mower necessary to achieve the desired cutting height.
