    摘要: There is disclosed herein a device that scans for contents or lack of contents in an enclosed package such as a postal envelope and separates those items which have contents from those which do not. Contents or lack of contents are determined by sensing the thickness of the package over a specified length. If the detection of thickness occurs over a distance less that that specified, it is determined that the package has no contents and therefore, the package is directed into the ''''normal'''' receptacle. Conversely, those packages with contents are directed into the ''''exception'''' receptacle. The disclosed device also provides for the use of multiple sensors so that various portions of the enclosed package may be simultaneously scanned for thickness. Unless one or more of the sensors provides a positive indication of contents over the specified length and distance of travel, the device will again place the package in the ''''normal'''' receptacle. There is also disclosed means of assuring that those packages which have been scanned for contents or lack of contents are correctly separated into the appropriate receptacle. If proper sorting does not occur, the device is automatically stopped. In addition, there is disclosed for inventory purposes an arrangement which counts the total pieces that are scanned by the device as well as those pieces which are sorted into the ''''exception'''' receptacle.

    摘要: A template according to the invention is configured for manual testing of a mail piece to determine if the dimensions and stiffness of the mail piece are acceptable for passage through an associated automated mail sorting machine. The template includes a frame having a pair of spaced, curved walls defining a curved test slot. The curved slot has an open end through which a mail piece can be inserted and a removal opening for removing the mail piece from the slot. The removal opening in a preferred embodiment comprises a lengthwise slot in one of the curved walls through which the mail piece can be manually held and pushed back out of the open end of the template. The template may include a bracket for mounting the template on a secure surface.

    摘要: An apparatus for determining the stiffness of mail pieces includes a bar or similar deflector for contacting a mail piece conveyed past the bar by a conveyor system, and vibrates when in contact with a passing mail piece, either due to the impact of the mail piece or by the action of a device which causes the deflector to vibrate before the mail piece hits it. A sensor measures a parameter indicative of change in the vibrations of the deflector and generates a signal indicative of the measured parameter. A processor, e.g. programmable controller or circuit, receives the signal from the sensor and determines a stiffness value for the mail piece based on decay in vibrations of the deflector caused by contact with the mail piece.

    摘要: A method is provided for preventing flat mail pieces having excessive thickness or stiffness from entering a mail processing machine wherein flat mail pieces are held on opposite sides and conveyed by paired conveyor belts around one or more curves, including one curve which is the sharpest curve in the mail processing machine. Such a method includes the steps of conveying a singulated stream of flat mail pieces one at a time though a test curve upstream from the sharpest curve of the mail processing machine, the test curve including an angled section at which each mail piece tends to bend, determining the thickness of each mail piece, determining the stiffness of each mail piece by measuring deflection of one of the belts of the test curve as an end portion of the mail piece is passing through the angled section, which deflection is in excess of deflection caused by the thickness of the mail piece as it passes between the belts, and diverting a mail piece out of the mail processing machine before it reaches the sharpest curve of the mail processing machine if predetermined stiffness and thickness criteria are exceeded by the thickness and stiffness of the mail piece. The angled section defines an angle less severe than the sharpest curve, whereby a mail piece that would likely jam the mail processing machine at the sharpest curve can pass through the test curve without jamming.

    摘要: A thickness measuring device for measuring the thickness dimension of an article being conveyed along a conveyor system comprises a rotary encoder, and a lever arm pivotally mounted upon the shaft of the rotary encoder. The lever arm has an end portion thereof disposed in contact with the article conveyor so as to be deflected by an article conveyed along the conveying path. Deflection of the lever arm causes the rotary shaft of the rotary encoder to undergo a predetermined amount of rotation which is indicative of the thickness dimension of the article being conveyed. The system is also operatively associated with a storage bin such that when a plurality of articles, having a predetermined cumulative thickness dimension, are detected, further conveyance of articles to the storage bin is terminated. The system further comprises a central processing unit (CPU) which has incorporated therein improved software which permits the system to accurately determine the thickness dimensions of articles having substantially constant, but relatively large thickness dimensions, as well as articles having variable dimensions.
