    Abstract: A toolholder has a shank with a tapered body which is adapted to fit into a complementary socket in an end face of a machine tool spindle. A blind bore in the body is engageable by holding means for holding the shank in the socket. A first axial section of this bore is threaded for engagement with a threaded member of one kind of holding means such as a pulling rod or a set bolt coacting with pulling means. A second axial section of the bore is enlarged to form an annular groove for engagement by an expansible head of a pulling member of an alternative kind of holding means. An encoder ring is removably fixed at the toolholder. Each time the tool is exchanged the encoder ring is replaced by an encoder ring corresponding to the new tool.

    Abstract: Cone heads for the shaft ends of machine tools are retained by friction within a correspondingly shaped mounting at the end of a driving part. If the tool during use will be subjected to pulling stresses, the friction may be insufficient to retain the tool. In order to obtain a satisfactory locking, the present design proposes the use of a spring washer mounted at the top of the cone head and adapted to engage the internal wall of the mounting when the cone head is introduced therein. A tubular member carried by means at the top of the cone head is designed to exert pressure on the washer to deform the same when it is desired to withdraw the cone head.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for refinishing a tapered surface of a machine tool component. The apparatus includes a head defining at least three tapered segments which are configured to conform precisely to the taper of the machine tool component being refinished. Each segment includes a surface for receiving an abrasive strip, the surfaces configured to conform and confront a conical surface of a taper to be refinished. The head is adapted to engage the tapered surface of the machine tool component so that upon rotation of the head, the abrasive strips abrade the conical surface of the component. A head for refinishing a spindle bore includes three outwardly extending segments whereas the head for refinishing a tool holder shank surface includes three segments extending between annular portions, each segment having an inner tapered surface for receiving the abrasive strips.

    Abstract: A borehole reaming cutter retention and fastening/locking system enable field replacement of borehole reaming cutter assemblies utilized in infrastructure emplacement horizontal drilling (HDD) applications. The borehole reaming cutter assembly retention/fastening system can withstand borehole drilling forces without the necessity of permanent welding, thereby allowing cutter interchangeability/replacement in the field. The borehole cutter retention assembly shape and design, coupled with the fastening/locking mechanism design, may be robust enough to replace permanent welding and may allow field cutter interchangeability and replacement. Current designs and devices utilize permanent welding of component/cutter assemblies, thereby requiring workshop/welding construction and deconstruction to enable the interchangeability and replacement of cutter assemblies.
