A system is provided for heating and thermally conditioning glass sheets, wherein sheets are conveyed individually or in groups or loads through a tunnel-type heating furnace and thermal conditioning area upon a series of aligned rollers. The rollers are driven in groups, with each group having an independent drive mechanism. The independent drive mechanisms are provided with interrelated controls whereby the system is controlled in zones of one or more groups of rolls. A sheet or load of sheets is advanced into a zone, and the rolls within that zone are then driven to convey the sheet or load in an oscillating forward and reverse manner to oscillate the glass within the zone. The oscillation proceeds according to a predetermined schedule whereby the distances travelled by the sheet or load on each forward and reverse stroke varies according to a predetermined pattern so that the contact points between the glass and rolls is different upon each reversal in direction. Similar oscillating schedules may be employed in subsequent zones of the heating furnace, as well as in a thermal conditioning region through which the sheet or load is conveyed.

A drive for the belt advantageously is controlled by a computer allowing display of the heater parameters etc. and includes a pair of motors connected to the belt with overrunning clutches and driven in opposite senses to alternately drive the belt and thereby prevent play in the movement of the latter. A system for conveying a series of glass sheets at a non-uniform speed through sheet treatment apparatus comprising a plurality of treatment stations. Longitudinally spaced conveyor rolls are rotated at a first speed at a first sheet treatment station where each sheet in turn is oriented and aligned properly relative to said conveying system and other rolls are rotated at a greater speed at a second sheet treatment station where the properly oriented and aligned sheet is treated. A plurality of clutch means selectively and simultaneously engage different subseries of a selected series of the conveyor rolls to rotate the selected series of rolls at said greater speed to transfer each sheet in succession to the second treatment station as rapidly as possible and then disengage each clutch means according to a predetermined time cycle that can be adjusted to accommodate for transferring glass sheets of different lengths to cause the rolls of each different subseries of the selected series of rolls in sequence to resume the first speed whenever the trailing edge of said glass sheet passes beyond its controlled subseries of rolls. This system reduces the overall length of the conveyor needed to move the series of glass sheets through several treatment stations and provides minimum marking on the glass sheet surfaces supported by the conveyor rolls by minimizing the proportion of glass sheet simultaneously engaged by rolls rotating at different rotational speeds. This system also minimizes the tendency of the sheets to become cocked or misaligned if they are not rectangular in outline.

The invention relates to a method of longitudinally deflecting conveyor rolls intended for bending glass panels. The method includes deflecting the conveyor rolls during a glass-panel bending process by turning link member on which the ends of the conveyor rolls are mounted with bearings. In order to turn the link members of each conveyor roll, at least one link member is subjected to a force sufficient for its turning by a position-identifying electric drive. At least the other link member is subjected to a force sufficient for its turning by a second electric drive, which is controlled on the basis of position data provided by the position-identifying electric drive. The present invention relates also to an assembly applying the method for bending glass panels.
