A lower blowing member of the air-cooling/tempering apparatus includes a plurality of blade-shaped members arranged into a combtooth shape each having a front end face provided with a plurality of arranged air-blowing openings. Each blade-shaped member has a front end face with a concave curve so that a gap from the plurality of airblowing openings to the bent glass sheet becomes substantially uniform. The arrangement of air-blowing openings provided on the front end face of each blade-shaped member is turned with a predetermined angle and extends in one direction in each side portion in plan view.

A method of and apparatus for bending a sheet of material heated to a formable, state such as glass, resinous polymeric material, viscoelastic material, and thermoplastic material, provides an improved pressing member for pressing the heated sheet against a first rigid mold which reduces the size of the buckles in the bent sheet, eliminates the need for a second rigid mold, reduces the process control steps, reduces the risk of damaging the rigid mold, increases the tolerances for the positioning of the sheet in the apparatus, and increases the range of application. The pressing member includes a flexible diaphragm which rolls the heated sheet against a rigid mold by first applying a pressure to a portion of the heated sheet and then radiating the pressure from that portion to the remaining surface area of the heated sheet in a rolling action. The bending apparatus includes a rigid mold and a flexible diaphragm pressurized into a convex shape for initially pressing on a portion of the heated sheet. A control system moves the pressing member toward the rigid mold and maintains the pressure on the flexible diaphragm so that as the pressing member is moved toward the rigid mold, the flexible member generally conforms to the shape of the rigid mold and rolls the heated sheet onto the rigid mold. To further reduce the size of any buckles, a holder for supporting the heated sheet between the rigid mold and the flexible diaphragm is provided. The holder includes a support surface for supporting the heated sheet generally planar before bending.

A glass sheet such as an automobile window glass sheet is bent to shape and tempered at one stage by a sheet glass bending and tempering apparatus. The sheet glass bending and tempering apparatus has solid contact members for pressing a glass sheet, which has been heated nearly to its softening point, to a desired shape and depriving the glass sheet of heat to cool the glass sheet quickly, the solid contact means having a contact surface for contacting the glass sheet and depriving the glass heat of heat therethrough. The contact surface has a plurality of grooves defined therein, and a plurality of air outlet ports defined in each of the grooves, for applying cooling air to the glass sheet, and a plurality of air inlet ports defined in each of the grooves, for drawing the air applied to the glass sheet. When the opposite surfaces of the glass sheet are pressed by the solid contact members, the pressure is temporarily reduced and then increased again to cool the glass sheet. The peripheral edge of the glass sheet, which requires a high degree of shaping accuracy, is cooled quickly by the solid contact members, and the central region of the glass sheet, which requires high optical properties, is cooled quickly by air jets.

The invention relates to a method of carrying glass sheets during heating and tempering as well as to a tempering apparatus for glass sheets, in which the method is applied. During heating, glass sheets are oscillated in a furnace (2) back and forth in a manner that the traveling distance forward on at least some of the reciprocating strokes is longer than the traveling distance backwards, whereby the transportation of each load of glass sheets from the upstream end of a furnace to the downstream end of a furnace occurs by means of the combined effect of several forward-directed long strokes. Shifting of a load of glass sheets from furnace into tempering section is effected by extending the forward-directed stroke of a load of glass sheets at the downstream end of said furnace while at the same time other loads of glass sheets in the furnace reverse for a backwards-directed stroke. Therefore, the downstream end of a furnace is provided with an intermediate conveyor (8), adapted to travel along with furnace conveyor (7) or tempering section conveyor (9) depending on which one of said conveyors (7 or 9 ) has a greater speed.

The glass sheet bending apparatus has a main ring mold disposed around the outer peripheral surface of the lower mold which has a first shaping surface for shaping the central area of the glass sheet, the main ring mold having a second shaping surface for shaping the peripheral edge of the glass sheet. The glass sheet bending apparatus also has an auxiliary ring mold disposed between the main ring mold and the lower mold and having a substantially horizontal, flat support surface for supporting the glass sheet between the central area and peripheral edge of the glass sheet. The auxiliary ring mold is lifted prior to the upward movement of the lower mold and the main ring mold for raising the glass support off the conveyor rolls with its support surface. There is also disclosed a method of bending a glass sheet.

A conveyor roll for conveying glass sheets and a conveyor comprising a plurality of said conveyor rolls is described. Each conveyor roll comprises a curved shaft conforming to the shape of said glass sheets transverse to their path of movement. A plurality of segments of essentially cylindrical configuration is mounted around said curved shaft. The segments have loosely interfitting tongues and grooves and a cylindrically shaped surface of a material that does not mar glass. When torque is applied to one of the end segments of said conveyor rolls, the glass engaging surfaces rotate in unison to convey the curved glass sheets through a treatment station included in glass sheet treating apparatus. A spring mounted about the shaft in position to apply axial pressure against the outer axial surface of the end segment to insure positive tongue in groove engagement would tend to mar said outer axial surface and to cause the end segment to drag in the absence of the present invention. The drag on different segmented rolls is uncontrolled and may easily lead to roll marking of the major surface of the glass sheets transported by the rotating segmented rolls, particularly when different end segments are dragged to different degrees.The present invention interposes a thrust bearing, preferably one comprising a pair of washers defining a race and bearings supported within said race between the spring and the end segment of each segmented roll of the conveyor to reduce and even eliminate said drag. In addition, the thrust bearings protect the end segments from surface marking due to the springs scratching against the axial outer surfaces of the end segments. Scratching that may result in weakening said end segments is consequently reduced by the inclusion of the thrust bearings.
