摘要:
A molding arrangement to produce a die cast of a complicated shape by using an air-evacuated, air-tight work chamber. The chamber has a crucible and a mold, and an inert gas is used. An arc is generated and the electric resistance of the inert gas is broken between a pair of electrodes provided in the chamber by oscillating a high frequency current from a high frequency oscillator circuit connected outside the chamber. The metal material is melted in the crucible by the arc, while supplying the inert gas and using discharging gas generated from the metal. When the metal is melted the injection of inert gas into the chamber is stopped, so as to make the chamber a vacuum. The furnace, which includes the chamber, is rotated and the melt in the crucible is transferred into the mold. The melt is then forced to reach every corner in the mold by the pressure of the inert gas which is injected again into the chamber.

In an electroslag remelting installation, a pair of consumable electrodes are immersed into a molten slag bath contained in a mold, which can be cooled by various arrangements of cooling liquid. AC electrical power is applied between the electrodes to cause current flow through the electrodes and through the molten slag bath and part of the molten metal pool, thereby heating and causing the electrodes to melt to form an ingot. As the electrodes melt, they are simultaneously fed together into the slag bath. A conductor, connected between the bottom plate of the mold which can include a weld lug and either a center tap on the secondary winding of the transformer supplying AC power to the electrodes or to a center tap on a choke coil connected in parallel with the secondary winding, provides an equalizing circuit which automatically adjusts the melting of the electrodes to keep them at equal immersion depths in the slag bath. Flexible electrical lines and connectors are grouped in close arrangement and in parallel paths where possible to avoid inductance losses.

In electric furnace systems, the electrode for supplying current to the furnace is normally moved up and down by a reciprocating mast mounted by upper and lower mast-guiding means fitting closely about the mast, the reciprocating motion being provided by suitable motor means. To prevent dangerous up-and-down extremes of travel of the mast, there is employed a normally-open type of switch means positioned between the upper and lower mastguiding means so as to be held closed by a surface of the mast during execution by the mast of its desired maximum length of travel. The mast surface is configured to permit the switch means to open when the mast moves beyond the desired maximum length of travel, and this opening of the switch is caused to deactuate the motor means. Preferably the configuring of the mast surface comprises providing a recess therein so positioned that when the switch arm, which normally rides along the exterior of the mast, reaches the recess, it moves into the recess to permit the switch to open and discontinue the motor operation. The position of the switch is preferably on the side of the mast away from the furnace means and within an at-least-partially protected region. Other arrangements employ more than one recess and/or switch, some of which may be used for normal arrest of the extreme motion of the mast and others of which may be used as back-up safety devices in case the normal mast-arresting arrangement does not function.

An arc furnace installation has furnace electrodes supported by electrode arms, the electrodes being vertically movably passed through a raisable and lowerable furnace cover on a laterally movable furnace vessel and their arms being vertically slidably applied to vertical pillars extending upwardly and the pillars having lower ends supported by supporting means positioned above and laterally free from the furnace vessel and its cover, leaving the space laterally aound the furnace vessel and its cover free from bulky equipment. This space is enclosed by side walls and movable screens providing insulation against furnace operating noise but by moving the screens permitting lateral movement of the furnace.

In a furnace having an electric arc extending between an electrode and material to be melted which is composed at least partially of conductive material, a resultant magnetic field having a desired field configuration is produced by mutual interaction of two or more separately and independently generated magnetic fields and the resultant magnetic field is utilized to improve furnace operation in a number of ways. In some embodiments, two fields are generated, one by a field coil in the tip of the electrode and one by a coil at or near the wall of the furnace, which latter coil may be a solenoid having a length to diameter ratio equal to or greater than one or a concentrated coil having a length to diameter ratio substantially less than one, and the resultant field has a configuration which may increase or improve arc-moving forces on the arc provided to reduce erosion of material from the electrode by arc action thereon, or may improve focusing of the arc between electrode and melt, or may improve control of a diffused arc, or may improve stirring of the melt, or may control the portion of the surface of the melt to which the arc strikes, or may prevent arc flares to the wall of the furnace, or may prevent glow discharges, or may increase feed rate, or may improve grain structure in an ingot produced, or may include any combination of the aforementioned and other improvements. In another embodiment, three magnetic fields are separately generated, one by an electric tip field coil, one by a solenoid and one by a concentrated coil adjacent the solenoid and having an axially adjustable position thereon. In a further embodiment, two magnetic fields are separately generated by two field generating means external to the electrode and under some conditions no interacting magnetic field is generated within the electrode. In other embodiments, two electrodes are mounted in the furnace each with an arc extending therefrom to the melt, and three electrodes are mounted in the furnace each with an arc extending therefrom to the melt. New and improved processes and methods of furnace operation are also described.

IN THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT THE NUMBER OF MELTS PER UNIT TIME IS INCREASED FOR AN ALECTRIC FURNACE WHICH USES A CRUCIBLE TO ABSORB THE EXCESS HEAT LOAD BY PROVIDING: (1) MEANS TO RAPIDLY COOL THE CRUCIBLE AFTER THE POWER HAS BEEN REMOVED, OR (2) SMALL, ISOLATED QUANTITIES OF WATER WHICH REDUCE THE EXPLOSION HAZARD. THE COOLING MEANS TAKES THE FORM OF PASSAGES WHICH EXTEND THROUGH THE CRUCIBLE AND ARE CONNECTED TO A SOURCE OF WATER. WATER IS PERMITTED TO ENTER TE PASSAGES ONLY AFTER THE POWER HAS BEEN REMOVED OR IN SMALL QUANTITIES ONLY. WHEN USING THE DRY SKULL TECHNIQUE, THE CRUCIBLE WILL HAVE BEEN SUBSTANTIALLY EMPTIED OF MOLTEN METAL. MEANS ARE PROVIDED TO PASS INERT GAS TROUGH THE PASSAGES TO CLEAR RESIDUAL WATER.
