A balanced antenna is integrated into a wireless mobile device, such as a laptop computer, for improved antenna reception. The antenna is connected to a radio frequency (RF) interconnection cable. A balun is disposed between the antenna and the cable. By using a balanced antenna, the fraction of the noise produced by the motherboard and display of the wireless mobile device that is captured by the antenna is significantly reduced compared to that captured by an unbalanced antenna, and thus not captured by the antenna.

High frequency power amplification modules comprise a dielectric substrate supporting a stepped impedance transition coupled to the input of a power amplifier and a symmetrically disposed stepped impedance transition connected to the output of the power amplifier. The power amplification modules are oriented in an electromagnetic energy field so that input electromagnetic energy is coupled to the input of the power amplifier by the input side stepped impedance transition, amplified by the amplifier, and emitted from the module by the output side stepped impedance transition. A plurality of the power amplification modules may be organized into an array to provide a power combiner. The power amplification modules in the array may be linked by isolation impedances that decouple the modules in the array.

A microwave amplifying apparatus includes a waveguide which is shorted at one end and supplied with a TM mode or a TE mode signal, a pickup probe mounted on the waveguide for converting the signal into a TEM mode signal, and microstrip lines and field effect transistors, or amplifier elements, for amplifying the TEM mode signal. A matching device is arranged on the shorted waveguide adjacent to an incidence side with respect to the pickup probe while an input terminal of the first-stage amplifier element is directly interconnected to an output terminal of the pickup probe. The device is, therefore, free from a signal loss otherwise developed between the pickup probe and the initial-stage amplifier element. The matching device consists of three conductive rods which are spaced a quarter-wavelength distance from each other, and three lock nuts for fixing the conductive rods.

A balun coupled microwave frequency converter is provided by a mixer using a single diode pair with one port balanced and the other port unbalanced. The balanced port is provided by first and second coplanar conductors extending toward a common area and juxtaposed in spaced parallel relation with a transmission line interacting therewith to couple a field balanced between the first and second conductors across the common area. The unbalanced port to the mixer is provided by a third conductor. The diode pair is connected in series between the first and second conductors, and a point between the diodes is connected to the third conductor. One implementation is an up converter with an LO and an IF signal applied on the third conductor and input to the mixer to generate an RF signal between the first and second conductors and hence an induced output RF signal on the transmission line.

The present invention uses two interconnected baluns with the balanced output of one feeding a balanced input of the other. When this filter is used in conjunction with a signal frequency converter, the balun pair not only provides extremely effective bandpass filtering so as to pass the RF frequencies and not the IF frequencies but, in addition, provides a condition which appears to the IF as a nearly open circuit and thus provides a large amount of reflection or return of the IF signals to the signal converter. Through the use of additional grounding stubs, additional coupling means, increased separation between coupling means and separated ground planes each singularly or in combination, improved performance has been obtained as compared to the prior art.

A novel technique for coupling microwave signals to a slot transmission line and for effecting a simultaneous impedance transformation. One lead of a microwave capacitor, connects to a source of microwave signals via a microstrip or coplanar transmission line. The other capacitor lead, located in the same plane as the slot line, crosses the slot line at a right angle and connects to the ground plane on the other side of the slot. A short-circuited segment of the slot line extends N.lambda./4 beyond the point of crossing where N is an odd integer.

A stripline slotted balun dipole antenna, suitable for use as a single antenna or as an array antenna element, is fabricated from two metal-clad dielectric sheets, from which metal has been removed in predetermined patterns, and then the sheets are sandwiched together to form both the slotted balun dipole antenna and its stripline feed. The metal remaining on the exterior of the laminated structure constitutes a slotted balun dipole and the metal remaining between the dielectric sheets constitutes the center conductor of the stripline feed. The structure obviates the need for metallic connections in the antenna area.

This invention relates to a low loss transmission line having a slotted metal deposited or etched on a high permittivity substrate. with various sizes, shapes and configurations of slots, the transmission line may be used as part of components such as hybrid junctions, couplers, filters, mixers, amplifiers, ferrite devices, and resonators. Novel slot/coax and slot/stripline junctions or connections are disclosed as well as novel methods of slot excitation.
