A vibrating cutting tool capable of making uniform micro-vibrations at the cutter edge generated during machining. The vibrations at the cutter edge are transmitted to balls biassed by springs, compressing the springs. The vibrations are transmitted from the balls through the output shaft back to the cutter edge. While the cutting force is small, the amplitude of vibration of balls is relatively large. When it increases, the holder acts on the balls more than the spring does so that vibration is suppressed. As a result, the amplitude of vibration becomes uniform.

The present invention is a tool assembly comprising a tool block and a tool holder capable of delivering chip-breaking fluid to the tool holder without a fixed attachment to the tool holder. The tool block is formed with a tool shank cavity having a tool support surface. The tool holder includes a shank insertable into the tool shank cavity of the tool block. A fluid delivery passage is formed in the tool block which terminate in an outlet opening. A primary fluid passage is formed in the tool holder and terminates in a discharge orifice positioned to direct a fluid jet at the chip being removed from the workpiece. A fluid path provides a path for the flow of chip-breaking fluid from the outlet of the delivery passage to the inlet of the primary fluid passage throughout the entire range of relative movement between the tool block and holder. In the preferred embodiment, the fluid path is a shallow recess formed in either the tool shank or tool block which forms an enclosed fluid cavity when the tool holder is mounted to the tool block.

The ultrasonic oscillation machining apparatus comprises a wide oscillating body divided into a plurality of units by one or more slits formed in said wide oscillating body with opposite end portions left thereon, a plurality of vertical ultrasonic oscillating elements secured to one end faces of said individual units of said wide oscillating body for producing vertical oscillations of such a frequency that said opposite end portions of said wide oscillating body are positioned at loop portions of oscillations of the wide oscillating body, and a bite provided at one of said end portions of said wide oscillating body which is positioned at one of the loop portions of oscillations of said wide oscillating body. The bite is driven with a high output power by vertical oscillations composite of oscillations produced by the individual vertical ultrasonic oscillating elements.

The tool head is inserted with an at least partially conical receiving pin into a correspondingly configured receiving bore in the tool holder. Tool head and tool holder are actuated by clamping elements so that a contact collar on the tool head rests against the counterface of the tool holder. The clamping device is composed of a clamping slide which is movable in the longitudinal direction of the tool holder. In the front part of the clamping slide, movable clamping jaws are provided which cooperate with a pin fixedly disposed in the tool holder in such a manner that movement of the clamping slide initiated during insertion of the receiving pin into the receiving bore causes the clamping jaws to be pushed onto the pin and to thus grip behind an annular groove in the blind bore of the tool head, thus causing the tool head to be locked to the tool holder.

Means for dressing a work piece in a lathe having a rotary driven shaft includes a work holder assembly adapted to hold a drum or disc in position for dressing a cylindrical face or a circular end face. The work holder assembly includes adapter members having conical faces for engaging a drum therebetween or for engaging in a central hole of a disc. A rigid circular plate has spaced threaded adjustable bolts bearing on the disc or an end wall of the drum. Spacer members bear against the circular plate. Another bolt seats in an end of the rotary driven shaft while the adapter members, plate, and spacer members are disposed in axial alignment on the shaft. The rigid plate and adjustment bolts hold the work piece in axial alignment with the shaft, and correct distortion in the disc or end wall of the drum. They also prevent vibration of the work piece during dressing.
