摘要: High density single crystal penetrators are made from alloys containing at least 90% tungsten, with the remainder being essentially tantalum, rhenium, niobium, molybdenum or a mixture thereof. The penetrator will generally be circular in cross-section and have a length to diameter ratio of at least about 10 to 1, with the single crystal body being aligned so the crystalline axis having the null100null orientation is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the penetrator. A penetrator having such desired crystalline characteristics can be formed by CVD about a heated substrate of body-centered cubic crystal material. One particularly efficient process utilizes static CVD in a closed chamber and employs a solid feedstock of polycrystalline tungsten alloy material.

摘要: A bullet comprised of a jacket of malleable metal having a closed nose portion and a rear end portion defined by a cylindrical wall, the closed nose portion having wall-weakening areas encapsulating a forward core made of a deformable material which promptly deforms, collapses axially, and expands radially to a substantial extent along with the weakened wall areas, when the bullet strikes a target. The wall weakened areas of the nose portion are ruptured by the core material to produce a collapsing and readily expanding action. These weakened wall areas are in the form of longitudinally extending, deep, internal or external, circumferentially spaced grooves with underlying web areas which are ruptured by the core material, to produce the collapsing and expanding action. This core is preferably made mainly of rubber, urethane, silicone, or one of a substantial number of plastics, such as fluorocarbons, polycarbonates, polypropylenes, polystyrenes, polyethylenes, PVCnull, silicone rubber, Nylonnull, and vinyl acetate, each of which has a hardness within a range of Shore A-20 to Rockwell R-122. A second core, made mainly of metal such as tungsten, lead, zinc, copper, tin, iron or alloys thereof or hard plastic, is seated, under pressure, behind the nose core and within the rear end portion of the jacket. The advantages of the bullet result from the fact that it collapses axially and expands widely and quickly, upon striking a target, and yet penetrates an adequate distance, without losing an appreciable amount of weight, and without passing through the entire body of the target, to thereby provide an adequate penetration, optimum expansion bullet.

摘要: A frangible bullet for use in training ranges as an alternative to live ammunition, which disintegrates upon impact with a target. The frangible bullet includes an elongated frangible core member fabricated from a thermoplastic polymer and at least one metal, the core member having a back end, an opposite tip end and a central portion therebetween, and having a core length between the back end and the tip end. The core member is jacketed in an outer jacket having a closed first end and an opposite opened second end, having a jacket length between the first end and second end, and defining a jacket chamber for complementarily receiving the core member therein. The core member fits inside the outer jacket such that the tip end of the frangible core member is exposed and impacts the target first, resulting in fragmentation of the core member and the outer jacket.

摘要: A projectile intended to be incorporated in a cartridge for firing from a shotgun, for use by police forces and other law enforcement agencies as a means of rapidly breaking a lock or bolt holding a door closed, comprises a cylindrical low-strength casing, for example of paper, filled with a dense non-toxic finely divided material such as tungsten powder. An advantage of the projectile disclosed, as compared to conventional shotgun projectiles, is that whilst the projectile will retain its integrity until it strikes the target and thus will effectively blast a hole through a lock or bolt or through the portion of the door carrying such, the impact of the projectile with the target will fragment the paper casing allowing the tungsten powder to disperse rapidly so that after the powder has passed through the door against which the projectile is fired the powder will lose momentum within a very short distance due to atmospheric drag on the fine tungsten particles.

摘要: A system and method for controlling roll in a projectile. The novel system (56) includes first (52) and second (58) sections adapted to counter-rotate relative to each other and a mechanism (76) for inducing the counter-rotation to generate a roll torque on the projectile (50). In the preferred embodiment, the mechanism (76) is a motor comprised of a rotor (64) affixed to the first section (52), and the second section (58) which acts as a stator that rotates around the rotor (64) when a current is applied to the armature. In an alternative embodiment, the second section (58) is turned by a motor (80) attached to the first section (52) which drives a small gear engaging a full-diameter ring gear (82) on the second section (58). In the illustrative examples, the first (52) and second (58) sections are a missile forebody and a tail section of the projectile.

摘要: Manufacturing processes for articles that are formed from compositions of matter that include powders containing tungsten and at least one binder, as well as articles formed thereby. In some embodiments, the processes include compacting the mixture of powders under a first pressure to yield a desired intermediate structure, then reshaping the structure under a second pressure that is lower than the first pressure to yield the desired article. The compacting steps may include punches and/or dies having different configurations and/or materials of construction. The composition of matter preferably is selected to reflow, or be reshaped, without fragmenting or otherwise disintegrating into discrete particles or particulate. In some embodiments, the compacted intermediate structure and/or final article has an extrusion constant of less than 30,000 psi. In some embodiments, the mixture of powders has an ASTM Hall flowmeter reading for fifty grams through a cone (without tapping) of less than 18 seconds.
