摘要: A penetrator includes a fore body having a center of aerodynamic pressure forward of a center of gravity and a stabilizing portion removably attached to the fore body such that, when attached to the fore body, a center of gravity for the penetrator is forward of a center of aerodynamic pressure for the penetrator. A method of using a penetrator includes propelling the penetrator toward a first target, penetrating the first target with a fore body of the penetrator, and detaching a stabilizing portion of the penetrator from the fore body. The method further includes impacting the second target with the fore body.

摘要: A less lethal ammunition round (10) includes a highly pliant projectile (24) that may impregnated with fine heavy particles. The projectile has an interior void (32) into which is placed a force transfer member (30) that engages an interior surface at the forward end of the projectile in front of the center of gravity. Upon ignition of a powder charge, a piston (26) in the cartridge chamber engages the transfer member which, in turn, elongates the projectile as the projectile forward end is driven, pulling the remainder of the projectile, reducing its diameter. This allows a release from the cartridge and passage through the barrel of the weapon from which it is being fired. Stabilizing fins (39) at the projectile base deploy as the projectile exits the muzzle. A breaching round is impregnated with a greater weight of heavy particles and its transfer member has an initial large diameter portion and a terminal smaller diameter portion. The breaching projectile similarly has a large diameter initial void and a smaller diameter terminal void. As the transfer member is urged forward, the forward part of the projectile is extended until the transfer member shoulder engages a similar shoulder in the void and no further elongation of the projectile occurs. The elongation is sufficient to release the projectile from the cartridge and permit it to travel through the weapon barrel without obstruction and without damage to the projectile.

摘要: The present disclosure suggests a method to remove well bore fluid from the path of a shaped-charge jet in order to reduce the effect it has on the jet tip. This most preferred embodiment uses a precursor liner and a primary liner both pressed in the same housing. In the most preferred embodiment, the primary liner is similar or equivalent to a standard big hole shaped charge liner. The precursor liner is pressed into the apex end of the primary liner and upon detonation is intended to form an initial very fast moving precursor jet to open a path through the fluid of the well bore annulus for the following primary jet. In the preferred embodiment the precursor liner is made from different material, preferably a less dense material and/or a material having a higher sound speed, than the material forming the primary liner.

摘要: A device for detecting attacking guided missiles with optical seeker head and for generating a laser beam directed to such guided missile has an all-around seeker with a detector responding to thermal radiation from the guided missile, and a laser which points to the guided missile detected by the all-around seeker. A roll and pitch gimbal system is provided. A roll gimbal is rotatable relative to the structure about a roll axis. A pitch gimbal is rotatable relative to the roll gimbal about a pitch axis orthogonal to the roll axis. The detector is structure-fixed. An imaging optical system is mounted on the roll and pitch gimbal system. The optical system with its optical axis can point to an object scenario. With each position of the gimbal system, an image of this object scenario is generated on the detector. The laser is also structure-fixed. A laser reflecting surface system is provided on the gimbal system, by means of which the laser beam is kept parallel to the optical axis of the imaging optical system, with each position of the gimbal system. Both the path of rays of the imaging optical system and the laser beam comprise a respective section extending along the pitch axis and a section extending along the roll axis.

摘要: A self-contained round of ammunition has a cartridge casing including a tubular body defining a cylindrical rifled bore and a base threadably attached to the casing body and forming a closure for a breech end of the rifled bore. A sabot which carries a ring airfoil projectile is constrained for limited axial movement within and relative to the bore from a loaded position adjacent the base to a fired position wherein an annular arresting lip integrally formed at the muzzle end of the cartridge body engages an annular abutment surface on the sabot. The lip defines a cylindrical muzzle opening having a diameter smaller than the diameter of the bore and larger than the major diameter of the projectile which may pass freely there through. The sabot in its loaded position cooperates with the base to form a pressure chamber therebetween for receiving gasses of explosion generated by a powder charge contained within the base and in communication with a primer mounted in the base. A bore engaging ring on the sabot has lands and grooves complementing associated portions of lands and grooves defining the rifling within the bore. When the round is fired the moving sabot is abruptly halted within the bore by the arresting lip at the muzzle end causing the spinning ring airfoil projectile to separate from the sabot and leave the cartridge along a flight path. A launcher for firing the self contained round includes a detent member which cooperates with a detent notch in the cartridge base to restrain the cartridge against angular movement about its axis and relative to the launcher when it is fired.

摘要: A crimped-case cartridge comprising a bullet and a casing wherein the casing has alternating crimped and uncrimped sections at its terminal end. The crimped sections form increased contact sections with the bullet, with the uncrimped sections maintaining proper head space for the cartridge. The amount of crimped section versus the amount of uncrimped section is variable to meet a variety of desired ballistic characteristics. Likewise, the amount of taper, angle of crimp, depth of crimp, and pressure applied in the crimped section is also variable. The crimped-case cartridge is employable with bullets having cannelure depressions of any geometry or no cannelure at all. Additionally, a bullet having a cannelure geometry mated to the crimped section geometry is disclosed. Likewise, a plurality of taper-crimp dies forming the crimped-die cartridge is disclosed.

摘要: A projectile and a method of launching a projectile from a barrel. The projectile of the present invention may be matched to a pre-selected barrel rifling to produce a controlled spin rate. Controlled spin rate is characterized by substantially balanced forward and axial deceleration. Substantially balanced forward and axial deceleration is characterized by an axial speed that decreases in relationship to the decrease in forward speed. Substantially balanced forward and axial deceleration produces a trajectory that is characterized by a gyroscopic stability factor that remains highly stable over a given distance of a trajectory. Gyroscopic stability is controlled during the projectile's flight by controlling the spin damping moment as a design element. Control of the spin damping moment may be achieved by incorporating physical features in the projectile's design and manufacture and/or may result from the incorporation of physical features imparted upon the projectile during launch.
