A camouflage material with wide-band effect ranging from the visible portion of the spetrum, the IR region of the spectrum from 1 to 20 micrometers, as well as the radar region from 3 GHz to 3,000 GHz, consisting of at least a base layer with a vapor deposited metallic reflecting layer having a surface resistivity of 0.1 to 10 ohms per square and a camouflage paint layer applied thereon, the pigments of which have reflectivity that is similar, in the visible and near infrared portions of the spectrum, to that of the natural background, for example, to chlorophyll. In order to insure that such a camouflage material provides secure protection against detection by thermal imaging apparatus, even in the far IR region of the spectrum, without reducing the protective effect in the visible and near IR region of the terrestrial thermal radiation as well as in the radar region, the camouflage paint contains a binder that has good transparency in the spectral regions of the atmospheric windows II (3-5 .mu.m) and III (8-14 .mu.m). The camouflage material can be used for camouflage nets and thermal insulation mats which, together with means for providing removal of hot gases, can constitute a suitable camouflage system for military targets in which heat is produced by internal combustion engines.

This invention discloses a mat for multispectral camouflage of objects and permanent constructions. The mat comprises a layer which is heat insulating and preferably also heat reflecting, especially a perforated layer. Materials such as carbon and metal are embedded into or coated upon the layer, said materials affecting the reflection and emission characteristics of the mat in the thermal infrared range and in the radar range. In order to obtain an overall protection against unwanted detection, also of plane and smooth surfaces, by means of a hard wearing camouflage mat said heat insulating and heat reflecting layer has on its side facing away from the object or permanent construction a diffusely reflecting layer, preferably a layer which is permeable to liquids.

A base fabric for a radar defeating camouflage material comprising a knitted fabric knitted from a plurality of strands to form a stretchable, flexible fabric having a plurality of openings therethrough, each of these strands constituting a spun mixture of noncontinuous polymeric fibers and noncontinuous metal or carbon fibers. The fibers can be nylon or polyester. The metal fibers can be stainless steel. The metal or carbon fibers can comprise about 2 - 10 percent by weight of the spun yarn, the fibers having an average diameter between about 0.008 and 0.02 millimeters and an average length between about 50 millimeters and 90 millimeters.

A camouflage system for concealing or obscuring a vehicle includes a camouflage cover attached at spaced apart locations to a plurality of inflatable support beams. The support beams can extend from a central hub. Deployment and stowing, of the camouflage cover by inflation and deflation of the support beams can be controlled from within the vehicle. Stowing can include fan-folding of the support beams and retraction of guide cords attached to distal ends of the support beams, or the deflated support beams can be wound around one or more spools when stowed. Embodiments include a plurality of inflatable bladders within each support beam, enabling a plurality of deployed states. The radar signature of the vehicle can be obfuscated by adding metallic layers to the camouflage cover, the support beams, and/or to separate inflatable radar reflection beams. Additional layers of conductive fabric can be included within inflatable beams.

It is herein proposed a novel multi-spectral artificial target device for producing a deceptive thermal and radar signature of an object. The device features a multi-layer structure with a substrate and a functional thermal signal layer, which is provided directly or indirectly on the substrate. The substrate is made of pliable material which is capable of being shaped on a frame. The thermal signal layer includes electrically conductive material such arranged to form an array of independently controlled thermal elements for outputting a thermal signal, which is observable in the infra-red spectrum, upon exposure to a control voltage. The multi-layer structure further includes a functional radar signal layer, which is provided directly or indirectly onto the substrate. The radar signal layer outputs a radar response signal, which is observable in the radio frequency spectrum, upon exposure to an external radar stimulus or excitation.

The textile layer can be a woven or non-woven. Embodiments are fashioned into shirts, pants, and/or other clothing, and can provide drape and moisture vapor transport for enhanced comfort.

A hunting blind is also provided that includes a frame including frame members and panels of the mesh material attached to the frame members.
