Abstract: Methods of pairing devices wirelessly that include matching received-signal-strength information regarding signal-strength patterns received by differing devices desired to be paired. In some embodiments, signal-strength patterns are based on a user moving an object so as to intentionally create multipath Fresnel-zone propagation disturbances. During pairing, the devices exchange their received-signal-strength information with one another and compare the received-signal-strength information that they receive from another device to the received-signal-strength information that they generated themselves based on the multipath Fresnel-zone propagation disturbances. When the two sets of receive-signal-strength information substantially match one another, the devices determine the presence of a trusted relationship. Methods for assisting with the wireless pairing are also disclosed. Disclosed methods can be encoded in software/firmware, and such software/firmware can be stored in devices desired to include disclosed wireless pairing functionality.

Abstract: A system and method for depth-resolved imaging of fluorophore concentrations in tissue uses a pulsed light source stimulus wavelength to illuminate the tissue; and a time-gated electronic camera such as a single-photon avalanche detector camera to observe the tissue in multiple time windows after start of each light pulse. A filter-changer or tunable filter is between the tissue and the electronic camera with fluorescent imaging settings and a stimulus wavelength setting, and an image processor receives reflectance images and fluorescent emissions images from the time-gated camera and processes these images into depth and quantity resolved images of fluorophore concentrations in the tissue.

The method further includes determining, from captured remission images, sub-diffuse scattering parameters of the material. A structured-light imaging system for determining sub-diffuse scattering parameters of a material includes a structured-light illuminator, for illuminating the material with structured light of periodic spatial structure, and a camera for capturing images of the remission of the structured light by the material. The structured-light imaging system further includes an analysis module for processing the images to quantitatively determine the sub-diffuse scattering parameters. A software product includes machine-readable instructions for analyzing images of remission of structured light by a material to determine sub-diffuse scattering parameters of the material.

Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure provide a sensing apparatus including a sensing device, a memory, and processing circuitry. The sensing device includes resonators having respective resonant frequencies. The resonators include an array of inductive coils positioned on a surface of the apparatus. The sensing device can output a signal indicating changes of the resonant frequencies caused by presence of an object proximate to the surface. The memory stores reference signals corresponding to reference objects. Each reference signal indicates changes of the resonant frequencies caused by the respective reference object proximate to the surface. The processing circuitry can receive, from the sensing device, a particular signal indicating changes of the resonant frequencies caused by presence of a particular object proximate to the surface. The processing circuitry compares the particular signal with the stored reference signals of the reference objects to determine an identity of the particular object.

Abstract: Methods for producing enantiodefined polycyclic compounds, particularly tetracyclic compounds, are provided. More particularly, synthetic methods for producing biologically active enantiodefined steroidal compositions of both natural (“nat-”) and unnatural (“ent-”) absolute stereochemistry are provided. An exemplary method for manufacturing a tetracyclic compound comprises a step of forming a hydrindane intermediate through coupling of a suitably functionalized enyne with a suitably functionalized alkyne and subsequently performing an intramolecular ring-closing reaction to form the tetracyclic compound. Steroidal compounds obtained by this method and methods of using such steroidal compounds in human and/or animal therapeutics and medicines are also provided.

Abstract: In an embodiment, the present disclosure pertains to a method of making magnetic nanoparticles through the utilization of a microfluidic reactor. In some embodiments, the microfluidic reactor includes a first inlet, a second inlet, and an outlet. In some embodiments, the method includes applying a magnetic nanoparticle precursor solution into the first inlet of the microfluidic reactor through a first flow rate and applying a reducing agent into the second inlet of the microfluidic reactor through a second flow rate. In some embodiments, the magnetic nanoparticles are produced in the microfluidic reactor and collected from the outlet of the microfluidic reactor. In an additional embodiment, the present disclosure pertains to a composition including a plurality of magnetic nanoparticles. In a further embodiment, the present disclosure pertains to a microfluidic reactor.
