Abstract:
The present invention provides plant retroelements useful as molecular tools. In one embodiment, the present invention provides nucleic acids encoding gag, pol and/or env genes of plant retroelements. The elements can be used, among other uses, as building blocks of other constructs, tools to find other nucleic acid sequences and tools to transfer nucleic acid into cells.
Abstract:
A load shedding method and apparatus to enhance uplink margin between a terrestrial terminal (14) and a satellite (12) in a satellite based communications system (10) is provided. The terrestrial terminal (14) includes a multi-carrier network (40) that generates a plurality of uplink carrier channels. A RF transmit and receive system (48) transmits the plurality of uplink carrier channels to the satellite (12). A terminal control unit (46) determines an attenuation level on the plurality of uplink carrier channels transmitted to the satellite (12). The terminal control unit (46) also instructs the multi-carrier network (40) to increase or decrease the number of uplink carrier channels to be transmitted to the satellite.
Abstract:
The disclosure describes a method of adjusting a reference level for uplink signal power for use in a dynamic power control system with satellite-based measurements in a satellite communications system. The uplink signal power for a plurality of received uplink signals is measured and combined to determine whether a signal power reference level requires adjustment. The signal powers of a plurality of uplink signals are measured at the satellite and the received signals are validated to ensure the signals are acceptable for use in adjusting the reference level. The valid signals are used to calculate an average signal power of the measured uplink signal powers, with the calculated average being compared to the current value of the reference level. Based on the comparison, the reference level either retains the current value or is reset to an adjusted value.
Abstract:
A directory service has a number of databases and a processing system with a number of processors. A first processor receives requests and passes them to one of a number of other processors to access one of the databases. The service has a firewall and a monitor outside the firewall for randomly generating names to access the database. A configuration manager communicates with applications in the database and processors and with a directory to cause applications to reconfigure in response to certain events.
Abstract:
An apparatus and a method for killing bacteria within an opaque liquid. The opaque liquid is moved along a high power ultraviolet radiation surface at a velocity which causes turbulent flow in the liquid. The turbulent flow mixes the opaque liquid so that all the liquid is exposed to the radiation even though the radiation does not penetrate the liquid to any significant depth. One embodiment of the invention moves the liquid in a serpentine path between multiple planar lamps which radiate UV from both planar surfaces.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a system and methods for coding and decoding digital data to improve the subjective quality of a voice signal. According to the invention, a sampled voice waveform is compressed by an ADPCM algorithm resulting in a sequence of samples. The sequence of samples are formed into an array and coded into parity bits. Row and column checksums are preferably performed on the parity bits to form row and column vectors. The samples and row and column vectors are transmitted to a receiving unit preferably having a diversity capability. The receiver processes each diversity block by generating row and column vectors from the received samples and comparing the generated row and column vectors to the row and column vectors received. Then based on the comparison, the samples of the best diversity block are used to reconstruct the voice waveform on a sample-by-sample basis.
Abstract:
An air/fuel control system for use with an internal combustion engine which is adapted to burn fuels having different combustion characteristics. The control system compensates for errors in the fuel-type signal produced by a sensor. A closed-loop air/fuel mixture controller responds to sensed exhaust oxygen levels to maintain combustion near stoichiometry. When the errors from the fuel type sensor predominate, at high engine speed and load, a fuel-type variable, initially obtained from the sensor, is adaptively modified. The error compensation scheme thus adapts to changing fuels, fuel sensor errors, and differing engine operating characteristics to provide better fuel control and improved performance.
Abstract:
Apparatus for determining the position of a point movable throughout a measuring volume relative to a set of reference axes includes a probe member (10) having a probe tip (11) defining the position of the movable point. The measuring probe (10) also has first and second reference points (12, 13) spaced apart from one another and having a fixed known spatial relationship with one another and with the probe tip (11). Means (16) are provided for moving the probe member (10) so that the probe tip may be positioned at any desired point within the measuring volume. At least three distance measuring equipments (15) are provided, located outside the measuring volume at fixed known positions relative to the set of reference axes and each operable to determine the distance between it and each of the reference points (12, 13) on the probe member (10). Calculating means (19) are provided to calculate from said distance measurements the position of the probe tip (11). The distance measuring equipments (15) may be laser rangefinders, with reflectors mounted on the probe member (10) at the reference points (12, 13).
