Abstract: A brake system for a vehicle has at least two hydraulic brake circuits, each with at least one hydraulically acting wheel brake, and a switching valve on each hydraulically acting wheel brake, which switching valve connects in each case one hydraulically acting wheel brake to one of the two brake circuits. The brake system also has a central outlet switching valve which brings about a switchable hydraulic connection between at least one of the brake circuits and a reservoir vessel, wherein the reduction in pressure in the at least one hydraulically acting wheel brake is effected by opening the central outlet switching valve and the associated switching valve.

Furthermore, the brake system has a hydraulic connection between at least one of the brake circuits and an accumulator container, said connection being switchable via at least one outlet switch valve, and the pressure supply device has a double stroke piston with a working stroke and a return stroke. The double stroke piston can be at least partly emptied via the outlet switch valve.

Abstract: A brake system may include: two hydraulic brake circuits, each having at least one wheel brake; a first pressure supply device for pressure build-up and release in at least one brake circuit via forward and return travel of a piston; a second pressure supply device with a continuous delivery, electromotively-driven piston pump, gear pump, or eccentric piston pump; at least one valve assembly with valves for adjusting pressure for each wheel brake and/or for connecting/disconnecting the wheel brakes and at least one of the pressure supply devices; at least one electronic control unit; a connection line connecting the two brake circuits; and at least one outlet valve for pressure release. The wheel brakes are paired with dedicated switch valves. Each brake circuit has a hydraulic main line to connect the switch valves to the first and second pressure supply devices, which provide different maximum pressures and/or delivery volumes.

During the diagnostic method, the control unit may be used to measure quantities relating to piston movement/position, pressure, and/or pressure variation.
