Abstract: An apparatus for surface aerating liquids. A surface aerator arranged in a tank creates horizontally directed surface flow which forms into waves as the flow progresses through the tank and impinges upon and is reflected from the tank wall. Baffles, preferably horizontal plates, are formed on the tank walls at these impingement zones to attenuate the waves by eliminating the vertical energy component thereof. These baffle plates are preferably arranged just below the surface of the liquid. At any given impingement zone, there may be either a single baffle plate or a plurality of such plates arranged one above the other.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for filtering liquids in which the liquid to be filtered is passed upwardly through a downwardly moving filter bed of granular filter material. The effective crosssection of the filter bed bottom is increased by forming up into this bottom a cavity into which the liquid is introduced for passage through the bed, and through which the lowermost granular filter material of the bed is removed. The cavity may be formed structurally with fixed, annular, conically arranged supports between which the granular filter material and the liquid pass downwardly and upwardly, respectively.

Abstract: A FILTER PRESS WHEREIN THE EFFECTIVE FILTERING AREA MAY BE ENLARGED BY THE CONSTRUCTION WHEREBY THE SPACE BETWEEN ADJACENT FILTER PLATES IS SUB-DIVIDED INTO CHAMBERS, EACH ISOLATED FROM EACH OTHER BUT IN FLUID COMMUNICATION WITH CORRESPONDING CHAMBERS IN THE SPACES BETWEEN ADJACENT FILTER PLATES. A SEPARATE FLUID CONVEYANCE DEVICE MAY BE PROVIDED FOR EACH GROUP OF CONNECTED CHAMBERS.

Abstract: Grit separating apparatus comprises an annular settling chamber having a floor which slopes conically downwards to an annular grit collecting channel. A conduit for removing grit extends downwardly through the chamber into the channel and is moved lengthwise of the channel to remove grit therefrom. The conduit is conveniently mounted on a bridge extending radially over the annular chamber and the bridge may serve to support agitating means to move the water through the setting chamber at an effective flow velocity between a raw water inlet port and a treated water outlet port.

Abstract: 1,156,054. Operating a filter press. U. PASSAVANT A.G. [trading as PASSAVANTWERKE]. 24 June, 1966 [25 June, 1965], No. 28500/66. Heading B1D. During the filtering part of the operating cycle of a filter press 1, slurry is delivered to inlet 11 of the press by a pump 3 while some slurry is withdrawn from aperture 13, causing a flow of slurry through the aligned delivery apertures of the press plates which prevents their becoming clogged. In Fig. 1, aperture 13 communicates by flexible pipe 14 with a container 16 containing gas under pressure, and inlet 11 and aperture 13 are respectively located in the fixed and movable heads of the press. The press is filled by opening valves 5, 10, 15, pump 3 and the gas in container 16 forcing slurry in from both ends. As the pressure rises, pump 3 begins to force slurry back into container 16 again, compressing the gas. Valve 15 is closed and valves 7, 10 opened before opening the press. In other embodiments, not illustrated, container 16 may be replaced by another pump, or a press may be filled from the centre with a container 16 at each end or may be filled from both ends with container 16 connected -to a central plate. Container 16 may hold 20-300% of the filling volume of the press. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the container moves. with the movable head of the press. In Fig. 3 (not shown), there is a system (27 . . . 32) for applying filter aid to the press .plates before filling with slurry. Residual compressed air from the filter aid tank is delivered to container 16 to assist in filling the press. A manometer (24), connected across the ends of the press, opens a short circuiting valve (23) if clogging causes a sufficient differential pressure, so that the press is thereafter filled from both ends and filter plate fracture avoided.
