摘要: A transverse connector assembly for connecting a pair of longitudinal connecting members of a spinal implant system includes a bendable arm with a hook member on either end thereof. Each hook member includes a bore and a curved receiving surface or pair of surfaces. The assembly includes a set screw with a break-off portion with a driving feature, and an axis of rotation corresponding to the bore central axis when the screw is rotatingly received in the bore. The set screw body also has a removal head and a radially extending structure on the break-off portion prohibiting engagement of the removal head by a driving tool while engaged with the break-off portion. The receiving surface of each hook member is oriented with respect to the set screw bore central axis for on axis engagement with a longitudinal connecting member. The hook members may be oriented toward one another, in the same direction or opposite one another. The set screw includes a projection that may be a point, a rim or a knurled dome.

摘要: Fixed and polyaxial bone attachment assemblies include a receiver with a pair of spaced arms defining a open channel for receiving a longitudinal connecting member. Inner surfaces of the arms have a flangeform discontinuous guide and advancement structure for receiving a closure structure, the longitudinal connecting member being captured in the receiver by the closure structure. The longitudinal connecting member receiving surface includes a bottom seat disposed opposite an opening of the channel and a pair of curved substantially opposed side surfaces facing toward one another on either side of the bottom seat. At least one projection extends from one of the side surfaces, the projection having a sharp end. Upon assembly with a longitudinal connecting member, such as a cylindrical rod, the projection sharp end engages and penetrates the surface of the longitudinal connecting member, guarding against translational and rotational movement of the rod within the receiver. The projection or projections are disposed either directly on a receiver or on a compression insert pre-loaded into the receiver.

摘要: A tool set for implanting a rod in a human spine in conjunction with bone screws. The tool set includes a pair of end guide tools that receive opposite ends of the rod in channels and under manipulation by a surgeon facilitate transport of the rod toward the bone screws attached to the guide tools. Intermediate guide tools having guiding pass through slots are utilized to guide intermediate locations along the rod toward associated bone screws. An attachment structure operably connects the guide tools to the bone screws. The guide tools each include a lower guide and advancement structure to allow a closure top with mating structure to be rotated and driven downward against the rod and to cooperate with similar structure in the bone screw to seat and lock the rod therein. A method utilizing the tool set allows a surgeon to percutaneously implant the rod in the patient.

摘要: A polyaxial bone screw assembly includes a threaded shank body having an upper capture structure, a head and an open, compressible retainer collar. The capture structure and retainer collar are both threaded for rotatable attachment within a cavity of the head. The head has a U-shaped cradle defining a channel for receiving a spinal fixation rod. The head channel communicates with the cavity and further with a restrictive opening that allows for loading the capture structure into the head but prevents passage of the attached retainer collar out of the head. The open retainer collar may be bottom- or top-loaded by compressing open ends of the ring towards each other, the collar springing back into a rounded shape after insertion in the head. The open collar has an external substantially spherical surface that mates with an internal surface of the head, providing a ball joint, enabling the head to be disposed at an angle relative to the shank body. The threaded capture structure includes a tool engagement formation and gripping surfaces for non-slip engagement by a tool for driving the shank body into bone.

摘要: A tool for implantation of a rod into a bone screw implanted in a human spine includes a guide member having a laterally opening channel disposed along an entire length thereof for side loading and receiving an implant fastener. A rod pushing member and a handle with a laterally opening channel are coaxial with the guide member, with the rod pushing member being rotatingly mateable to the guide member and the handle having a spring attachment mechanism for attaching the handle to the guide member. The guide member includes spring tabs for attachment to a bone screw, the tabs biased away from the bone screw. The rod pushing member includes a sleeve that extends substantially about the guide member, pressing the spring tabs toward the bone screw and into apertures on the bone screw arms. The rod pushing member sleeve also operatively functions as a rod pusher that abuts a rod as the sleeve is translated along the guide member and toward the bone screw. The handle lateral opening receives and supports a manipulation tool for inserting and installing an implant fastener for attaching the rod to the bone screw.

摘要: A polyaxial bone screw having a bone implantable shank, a head and a retaining ring. The retaining ring includes an outer partial hemispherical surface and an inner bore with radially extending channels and partial capture recesses. The shank includes a bone implantable body with an external helical wound thread and an upwardly extending capture structure. The capture structure includes at least one spline which extends radially outward and has a wedged surface that faces radially outward therefrom. The capture structure operably passes through a central bore of the retaining ring while the spline passes through a suitably shaped channel so that the spline becomes positioned above the head at which time the shank is rotated appropriately and the shank is drawn back downwardly so that the spline engages and seats in the capture recess. The head includes an internal cavity having a spherical shaped surface that mates with the ring surface and has a lower restrictive neck that prevents passage of the ring once the ring is seated in the cavity.

The peak of such convexity is displaced anteriorly of a central plane through the device. The spacer device has a height which is greater than the width of the device. The spacer device is implanted between a pair of adjacent vertebrae by insertion in a tipped-over orientation and then reoriented to an upright orientation for engagement by facing surfaces of the vertebrae. Fusion promoting bone material is packed between the vertebrae and about and within the spacer device subsequent to implantation.
