Abstract: Various embodiments provide methods and systems for users and business owners to share content and/or links to visual elements of a place at a physical location, and, in response to a user device pointing at a tagged place, causing the content and/or links to the visual elements of the place to be presented on the user device. In some embodiments, content and links are tied to specific objects at a place based at least in part upon one of Global Positioning System (GPS) locations, Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) orientations, compass data, or one or more visual matching algorithms. Once the content and links are attached to the specific objects of the place, they can be discovered by a user with a portable device pointing at the specific objects in the real world.

Abstract: Various embodiments provide methods and systems for providing a recommended volume level in presentation of media content. In some embodiments, volume adjustment events made by a user and/or similar users while watching media content can be detected and automatically recorded. The media content may include a plurality of segments. A normalized volume level for at least one segment of the media content can be determined by aggregating the recorded volume adjustment events corresponding to the at least one segment of the media content. When the media content is played back on a user device, at least some embodiments cause the at least one segment of the media content to be played back at a recommended volume level determined based at least in part upon one of the normalized audio level of the corresponding segment, the audio system of the user device, or historical data and personal profile of the user.

Abstract: Systems and methods for a markerless approach to displaying an image of a virtual object in an environment are described. A computing device is used to capture an image of a real-world environment; for example including a feature-rich planar surface. One or more virtual objects which do not exist in the real-world environment are displayed in the image, such as by being positioned in a manner that they appear to be resting on the planar surface, based at least on a sensor bias value and scale information obtained by capturing multiple image views of the real-world environment.

Abstract: A set of training images is obtained by analyzing text associated with various images to identify images likely demonstrating a visual attribute. Localization can be used to extract patches corresponding to these attributes, which can then have features or feature vectors determined to train, for example, a convolutional neural network. A query image can be received and analyzed using the trained network to determine a set of items whose images demonstrate visual similarity to the query image at least with respect to the attribute of interest. The similarity can be output from the network or determined using distances in attribute space. Content for at least a determined number of highest ranked, or most similar, items can then be provided in response to the query image.

In order to view what an object may look like prior to purchasing the object, a computing device may show a 3D container that has the same dimensions as the object. As discussed herein, the 3D container may be located and oriented based on a two-dimensional marker. Moreover, some 3D containers may contain a representation of an object, which may be a 2D image of the object.

Abstract: The recognition of objects such as clothing items can be improved by capturing image data that represents the material characteristics and true color of the object. A high resolution image can be captured that shows the individual threads and/or fibers, among other possible pattern or texture characteristics. Various approaches are discussed for determining the scale of these features to more accurately determine the way the material is made. Further, approaches are discussed that enable the true color of the material to be determined, through hardware and/or software, to further improve the accuracy of such a determination. The material and color properties can be combined with a conventional object recognition process to provide accurate object identification and/or authentication results.

Abstract: Various embodiments may increase scalability of image representations stored in a database for use in image matching and retrieval. For example, a system providing image matching can obtain images of a number of inventory items, extract features from each image using a feature extraction algorithm, and transform the same into their feature descriptor representations. These feature descriptor representations can be subsequently stored and used to compare against query images submitted by users. Though the size of each feature descriptor representation isn't particularly large, the total number of these descriptors requires a substantial amount of storage space. Accordingly, feature descriptor representations are compressed to minimize storage and, in one example, machine learning can be used to compensate for information lost as a result of the compression.

Abstract: Disclosed are various embodiments for detection of cast members in video content such as movies, television shows, and other programs. Data indicating cast members who appear in a video program is obtained. Each cast member is associated with a reference image depicting a face of the cast member. A frame is obtained from the video program, and a face is detected in the frame. The frame can correspond to a scene in the video program. The detected face in the frame is recognized as being a particular cast member based at least in part on the reference image depicting the cast member. An association between the cast member and the frame is generated in response to the detected face in the frame being recognized as the cast member.
