A dynamic, flexible and intuitive task-oriented graphical user interface (GUI) is implemented on network accessible hand-held mobile devices. A mobile hand-held device is characterized by limited screen size and fewer input keys compared to a keyboard. In a home network environment, such mobile hand-held devices act as remote control devices for home devices. Typical examples of such remote control device are universal remote control and cell phone. In one implementation the GUI provides techniques for displaying large amounts of data using a small screen. The GUI also presents a technique for making the user aware of current abstract available options and smoothly guiding his current intention into a task selection that the remote control can understand and execute on.

A task access system implements a methodology that facilitates one to explore and execute tasks possible in a network such as a home network environment. The system provides interfaces to access task information and supports several types of functionalities that help in customization of the task information based on the requesting user's state/context. The system supports composing a task request in different ways. It allows a task request to be composed and executed in an incremental fashion or at one-go, thus enabling user interface applications to be flexible. When a user requests to know the tasks available in the network, the system applies security policies and more user context information to customize and prioritize the tasks available for each user and ensures that the user interface application does not display tasks that are not executable by the user. Further, the system dynamically updates the user interface application based on the user input and any changes in the network environment, such as addition or removal of devices/services, thus ensuring only meaningful information is displayed to the user. In addition, the user is updated with the newly possible tasks and the ones no longer available. By dynamically updating the choices available for the user, the system effectively guides the user input.

A system and method in a network of devices, which ascertains the user's context to suggest the most preferred task for the user to perform. User's context includes his/her location, the content he/she is interested in, the devices which are being used by him/her, and the devices and content allowed to be used by the user. Using this context, the system suggests tasks to the user that are appropriate to that context. The determination of context and the suggestion of tasks are performed by keeping track of the content and the devices available to the user at any given time. The suggestion of tasks is performed in accordance with certain policies. For example, the user can control the behavior of the system by changing the rules in the policy. Tasks are in the form of simple sentences that can be easily understood by the user. If, based on certain context, more than one task is possible, the system suggests the task with the highest priority to the user.

Collaborative Filtering is then performed on the selected pieces of media content and the users.

Such a method and system enables applications to be easily developed and distributed over the Internet using popular Web browsers as the platform for application runtime environments.
