Embodiments of the invention provide methods for transmitting reference signals (RS) from user equipments (UEs) in wireless communication systems. These RS are used, among other functions, by a serving base station to schedule data transmission from UEs and perform power and timing control of the UE signal transmissions. The RS are constructed based on constant amplitude zero autocorrelation (CAZAC) sequences, including their possible modifications. The invention describes methods to multiplex transmission of RS from multiple UEs by having the serving base station control the CAZAC sequence and the associated cyclic shift, transmission bandwidth, transmission period, and transmission power applied to the RS transmission by each UE.

Methods and apparatus are provided for a User Equipment to transmit acknowledgement information together with data information to a base station during a Transmission Time Interval. A number of nominal resources for the transmission of the first set of AIBs is compared to a number of resources available to the UE for transmission of the acknowledgement information. The first set of AIBs is transmitted if the number of nominal resources is less than or equal to the number of available resources. A second set of AIBs is selected from the first set of AIBs and bundling operations are performed over respective distinct subsets of AIBs in the second set of AIBs to obtain a third set of AIBs if the number of nominal resources is greater than the number of available resources. The third set of AIBs and a fourth set of AIBs are transmitted.

A method and apparatus for transmitting and receiving a Sounding Reference Signal (SRS) to a network in a communication system. A bandwidth allocated by the network to transmissions of one or more random access channels is determined. An SRS bandwidth configuration is reconfigured by setting a maximum bandwidth value of the SRS bandwidth configuration to a value that avoids overlapping the bandwidth allocated to transmissions of the one or more random access channels. The SRS is transmitted in accordance with a bandwidth from the reconfigured SRS bandwidth configuration. Information regarding the SRS bandwidth configuration is provided to a User Equipment (UE) by the network.

The UE may also determine whether to transmit UCI together with data information in the PUSCH or, separate from data information, in the PUCCH based on criteria involving either a ratio of PUSCH resources for UCI transmission over the total PUSCH resources, a Modulation and Coding Scheme (MCS) for the data information, an absolute power difference between PUCCH and PUSCH transmissions, whether the PUSCH transmission uses frequency hopping, or whether spatial multiplexing is used for the data transmission.

The SAs consist of Information Elements (IEs) including a Transmission Power Control (TPC) IE providing adjustments for the transmission power of the acknowledgement signal. The TPC IE in a first SA of the multiple SAs is used to provide the previous adjustments and the TPC IEs in the remaining of the multiple SAs are used to provide an indication of the resource used for the transmission of the acknowledgment signal.
