Abstract: An optical network includes a transmitter portion configured to transmit a digitized stream of symbols over a digital optical link, a mapping unit disposed within the transmitter portion and configured to code the transmitted digitized stream of symbols with a mapping code prior to transmission over the digital optical link, a receiver portion configured to recover the coded stream of symbols from the digital optical link, and a demapping unit disposed within the receiver portion and configured to map the recovered coded stream of symbols into an uncoded digitized signal corresponding to the digitized stream of symbols at the transmitter portion prior to coding by the mapping unit.

Abstract: A method for quantum-key-distribution-based encrypted data transmission in an optical/radio-access network, having a plurality of end nodes, includes, at a first node of the network: (a) via an optical quantum channel, exchanging photonic qubits with a second node, wherein the photonic qubits are processable to derive therefrom an initial key such that each of the first and second nodes have a copy of the initial key, (b) via a classical channel, exchanging a series of encrypted keys with the second node, wherein a first encrypted key is encrypted by the initial key, and each subsequent encrypted key is encrypted by a preceding encrypted key, and (c) via the classical channel, exchanging encrypted data with the second node, wherein the encrypted data is encrypted by a last encrypted key in the series of encrypted keys. One, but not both, of the first and second nodes is an end node.

Abstract: A method for differentiator-based compression of digital data includes (a) multiplying a tap-weight vector by an original data vector to generate a predicted signal, the original data vector comprising N sequential samples of an original signal, N being an integer greater than or equal to one, (b) using a subtraction module, subtracting the predicted signal from a sample of the original signal to obtain an error signal, (c) using a quantization module, quantizing the error signal to obtain a quantized error signal, and (d) updating the tap-weight vector according to changing statistical properties of the original signal.
