Abstract: An apparatus comprises a processing device configured to identify a snapshot lineage comprising (i) a local snapshot lineage stored on a storage system and (ii) a cloud snapshot lineage stored on cloud storage of a cloud external to the storage system. The processing device is also configured to select, in accordance with a snapshot policy, a snapshot in the local snapshot lineage to copy to the cloud snapshot lineage. The processing device is further configured to create a virtual device on the storage system, to link the selected snapshot to the virtual device, to determine data of the selected snapshot that is to be copied from the virtual device to a cloud storage volume on the cloud storage, and to copy the selected snapshot to the cloud snapshot lineage by copying the determined data from the virtual device to the cloud storage volume.

Abstract: A remote data facility includes a primary storage volume on a first storage system mirrored to a backup storage volume on a second storage system. A nocopy clone of a production volume is added to the primary storage volume. A define process is used to cause the tracks of the nocopy clone to point to backend allocations of tracks of memory of the production volume. As tracks of the nocopy clone are defined, corresponding flags are marked as invalid to cause data associated with the tracks to be replicated across the remote data facility to the backup storage volume. Incremental clones can be added to the primary storage volume, defined, and replicated on the remote data facility using the same process. Nocopy clones and target-less nocopy snapshots of the backup storage volume are used to restore the production volume using failover/failback mechanisms of the remote data facility.

Abstract: Architectures and techniques are described that can enhance the functionality of a witness for an active-active storage array. In the event of a dual storage area network (SAN) failure, or another suitable event, host-array connectivity can take precedence for the witness in determining a winner or loser. Techniques are presented to identify connectivity issues and to utilize connectivity data in connection with determining a winner or a loser.

Abstract: Techniques for migrating data of a logical device from a source to a target system may include: obtaining a map indicating unused data portions of a logical device; issuing read commands from the target system to the source system to only read data from the source copy of the logical device for logical addresses that are not marked in the map as unused data portions; receiving the read data at the target system; writing the read data to second logical addresses of the target copy of the logical device on the target system; and marking logical addresses indicated by the map as corresponding to the unused data portions. The source system may also determine whether all data of a received read request that reads data from the logical device is included in an unused data portion and if so, return no read data and a specialized error condition.

Abstract: In a data storage system in which a first storage array and a second storage array maintain first and second replicas of a production volume, the replicas are made discoverable and accessible while inconsistent. Each storage array maintains an invalid track list of inconsistencies. Initially, all tracks are marked as invalid. While background synchronization is eliminating inconsistencies, accesses to invalid tracks are resolved by exchanging data associated with IOs and updating the invalid track lists based on IO bias and other factors.
