    Abstract: According to a general aspect, a method can include receiving a photo of a virtual conference participant, and a depth map based on the photo, and generating a plurality of synthesized images based on the photo. The plurality of synthesized images can have respective simulated gaze directions of the virtual conference participant. The method can also include receiving, during a virtual conference, an indication of a current gaze direction of the virtual conference participant. The method can further include animating, in a display of the virtual conference, an avatar corresponding with the virtual conference participant. The avatar can be based on the photo. Animating the avatar can be based on the photo, the depth map and at least one synthesized image of the plurality of synthesized images, the at least one synthesized image corresponding with the current gaze direction.

    Abstract: Augmented reality devices can be configured to display messages in response to sounds from an environment. A variety of techniques can be combined to localize and track the sources of the sounds in the environment. Messages created in response to the sounds can then be anchored to their corresponding sources in order to provide a user with a clear understanding of the location of sources of the messages. Additionally, these anchored messages can be enhanced with additional information, such as identification, to further the user’s understanding of the sources of the messages. The anchored messages can track relative movement to integrate with the AR environment.

    Abstract: An electronic device includes a touch cord for inputting user commands by hand gesture.     Abstract: Aspects of the technology provide a symbiotic graphical display on a client device such as a smartwatch. The system includes at least one emissive display element and at least one non-emissive display element. The display elements are arrayed in layers or other configurations such that content or other information is concurrently aligned across the respective display surfaces of the different elements. A first set of content is rendered using the non-emissive display element while a second set of content is rendered using the emissive display element. Depending on characteristics or features of a given content item, that item may be rendered by one or both of the display elements. Certain content may be transitioned from the emissive display element to the non-emissive display element according to a time threshold or other criteria.

    Abstract: The present disclosure provides systems and methods for using a linear resonant actuator (“LRA”) to determine a type of contact between a device and its surroundings. The LRA may be coupled to an amplifier by one or more switches. The audio amplifier may receive a signal from a microcontroller and transmit the signal the LRA when the switches are closed. When the switches are in an open position, the LRA may be actively sensing for the type of contact. The back EMF may be measured when the switches are open. The measured back EMF waveform may be used to determine the type of contact. When the signal is not being transmitted, the LRA may be passively sensing to determine whether the device was tapped.

    Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure provide a hybrid smartwatch that incorporates digital technology with an analog timepiece in a wristwatch form factor. A digital display layer of a non-emissive material is configured to present notices, data, content and other information. An analog display layer includes one or more hands of the timepiece, and overlies the digital display layer. The hands may be controlled by a processor through micro-stepper motors or other actuators. Physical motion of the hands provides expressivity, for instance via visual mechatronic effects. This may include buzzing, clapping, providing stylized visual features, hiding or minimizing information, and revealing information. The information presented on the digital display layer is presented concurrently with the hand movement, in a manner that complements the hand motion. This provides a rich, symbiotic dual-display layer arrangement that enhances the capabilities of the digital and analog display layers.
