An optically active 4-alkylbenzenethiol and an optically active bis(4-alkylphenyl)disulfide represented by the formula: ##STR1## respectively, R.sub.1 * and R.sub.2 * are respectively an alkyl group having 1-12 carbon atoms including an asymmetric carbon atom, may be prepared, e.g., through halogenation or sulfonation of an optically active alcohol, followed by reaction with a phenylmagnesium halide, chlorosulfonylation and reduction. The optically active thiol or disulfide is effective, e.g., in preventing occurrence of reverse domain when added to a nematic liquid crystal, and also can be bonded to an intermediate to provide a functional material including a mesomorphic compound represented by the formula: ##STR2## wherein R.sub.3 is an alkyl or alkoxy group having 1-18 carbon atoms, n is 1 or 2, and C* is an asymmetric carbon atom.

A liquid crystal device, comprising: a pair of substrates, and a ferroelectric liquid crystal disposed between the substrates, each of the substrates having thereon an electrode for applying a voltage to the liquid crystal and a uniaxial alignment film provided with a uniaxial alignment axis, the alignment films on the pair of substrates being substantially parallel with each other and having an identical axis direction; wherein the ferroelectric liquid crystal is disposed in such an alignment state that the liquid crystal shows a pretilt angle .alpha., a cone angle H, an inclination angle .delta. of SmC* layer, and an apparent tilt angle .theta. a satisfying relationships of: H .theta.a>H/2; and the ferroelectric liquid crystal comprises at least three mesomorphic compounds represented by the following formula (I): ##STR1## wherein m and n are an integer of 6 to 12, said at least three mesomorphic compounds including:(a) a mesomorphic compound showing a nematic phase and no smectic C phase;(b) a mesomorphic compound showing a nematic phase and a smectic C phase; and(c) a mesomorphic compound showing a smectic C phase and no nematic phase, respectively on temperature decrease from a temperature of isotropic liquid.

A liquid crystal device comprises a pair of parallel substrates and a ferroelectric liquid crystal disposed between the substrates so as to have an arrangement of molecules forming a plurality of layers perpendicular to the faces of the substrates. At least one of the pair of substrates has an alignment control film formed of a modified polyvinyl alcohol resin having a function of aligning said plurality of layers preferentially in one direction. The modified polyvinyl alcohol resin film stably provides a uniform alignment state with a large tilt angle than a conventional alignment control film of polyimide or unmodified polyvinyl alcohol.

A liquid crystal apparatus comprises a liquid crystal device comprising a group of scanning electrodes and a group of signal electrodes intersecting each other to form an electrode matrix, and a chiral smectic liquid crystal disposed in a non-helical alignment state so as to form a picture element at each intersection of the scanning electrodes and the signal electrodes. Drive means are provided for: (a) applying a scanning selection signal and a scanning non-selection signal to the scanning electrodes, the scanning selection signal comprising a voltage of one polarity and a voltage of the other polarity, respectively with reference to a voltage level of the scanning nonselection signal, and being applied in a period for selecting one scanning electrode, (b) in a period of applying the voltage of one polarity, applying signals to the signal electrodes for causing one orientation state of the chiral smectic liquid crystal, so as to non-selectively erase the picture elements on a scanning electrode to which the scanning selection signal is applied, and (c) periodically applying the scanning selection signal to the scanning electrodes.

A driving method is provided for driving an optical modulation device. The device has picture elements arranged in the form of a matrix consisting of a plurality of rows and a plurality of columns defined by the intersections of scanning electrodes and signal electrodes, and a liquid crystal having a memory function. The picture elements in each row are selectively supplied with either a voltage for orienting the liquid crystal to one display state, or another voltage for orienting the liquid crystal to another display state. The method comprises the steps of sequentially and repetitively applying a scanning selection signal to the scanning electrodes, the scanning selection signal comprising a former signal of a first voltage and a latter voltage signal of a second voltage different from the first voltage to one of the scanning electrodes to select a particular scanning electrode, and applying data signals to the signal electrodes, each data signal comprising an information signal for selecting a display state of a picture element on the particular scanning electrode. The picture elements on the particular scanning electrode supplied with the former voltage signal are non-selectively erased into an erased state and a picture element on the particular scanning electrode supplied with the latter voltage signal is placed in either the one display state or another display state depending on the information signal.
