摘要:
A feed system for a cellulose pulp treating vessel (such as a continuous digester) is not limited by the required L/W ratio of the pump feeding a wood chip slurry to a high pressure transfer device, the feed system may be kept at a low temperature to minimize flashing of liquid into steam, and a return conduit from the treatment vessel to the transfer device high pressure inlet may be eliminated. Some of the liquid is removed from the slurry just before the low pressure inlet to the transfer device, and/or just after the high pressure outlet, to reduce the L/W ratio of the slurry by at least 0.25, e.g. from 3.0:1 to 2.25:1 just before the low pressure inlet, and from 7.0:1 to 5.0:1 substantially immediately after the high pressure outlet.

In the feeding of a slurry of comminuted cellulosic fibrous material to a digester (continuous or batch) in the production of chemical pulp, one of the tanks used in the feed system (which preferably includes a high pressure feeder) may be eliminated without consequent loss of its function by providing a single tank with the combined functions of controlling the level of liquid in a slurrying conduit which supplies slurry to a slurry pump, and storing and substantially continuously supplying liquid to a make-up liquid pump connected to the digester. The single tank preferably surrounds the slurrying conduit and is substantially concentric, and in liquid communication, with it. A gap of 3-48 inches may be provided between the bottom of the conduit and a connection to the slurry pump. A screen or strainer may be provided in the gap, which is substantially surrounded by the tank. The return system from the low pressure outlet of the high pressure feeder to the slurrying device (like the conduit and tank surrounding it, or a conventional clip tube) may be devoid of one or more of an in-line drainer, level tank, centrifugal separator, and surge tank.

Kraft pulp of increased strength and bleachability may be produced with decreased consumption of effective alkali, and at a lower H factor, by keeping the dissolved organic material (DOM) concentration low substantially through the entire kraft cook, including by extracting high DOM liquid from at least one part of a continuous digester and replacing it with much lower level DOM liquid. Existing pulp mills having two-vessel hydraulic, one-vessel hydraulic, or other systems may be retrofit to provide for extractions and additions of low DOM dilution liquor (including substantially DOM-free white liquor). Also, commercial size batch digesters (8 tons per day of pulp or more) can be operated with low DOM liquor to produce increased strength pulp. Using dilution with low DOM liquor also results in reduced H factor and effective alkali consumption, and increased bleachability.

In a vertical digester for producing chemical pulp, or other vessel for treating a slurry of comminuted fibrous cellulosic material, the cost of manufacturing the shell is significantly reduced by eliminating the external step increases in the digester shell. The digester shell has a substantially constant internal diameter from just below the inlet to just above the outlet, screen assemblies being provided by an internal transition (e.g. conical) having an angle of convergence of less than 40.degree. (e.g. about 10-25.degree.) above each screen assembly so that the slurry flows through the transition without bridging or hang-up, and a step increase, or other increase, in diameter back to the first diameter after the screen assembly.

A chip feeding system for a continuous digester provides for a greater rate of delivery of chip slurry to the digester, and is much less expensive than conventional chip feeding systems, typically being only 40-50% of the height of the conventional system. An atmospheric vessel may be connected at the bottom thereof to a slurry pump which pumps the chip slurry to a conventional high pressure feeder. A recirculation loop for returning liquid from the feeder to the vessel may include an atmospheric level tank, and a liquid cooler. The vessel may have one dimensional convergence and side relief, and instead of a conventional cylindrical chip bin, the chip bin may have a hopper having two transitions with one dimensional convergence and side relief. The chip bin also may be at atmospheric pressure so that no low pressure feeder between the bin and vessel is necessary. Alternatively, the vessel may be pressurized while an atmospheric-pressure level tank is provided, the high pressure feeder being mounted directly at ground level.

A continuous digester discharges pulp without mechanically engaging the pulp, by using one or more discharge transitions with one dimensional convergence and side relief. The transitions may be mounted within a pre-existing digester shell (after removal of the discharge rotor), and supported by a number of braces and/or a skirt shaped like a truncated cone. The operation of a digester, or other continuous vessel, may be controlled by automatically sensing the level of comminuted cellulosic fibrous material in the vessel and automatically controlling the introduction of dilution liquid into the vessel to discharge the material from the vessel in response to the sensing.

Digester systems for producing paper pulp from comminuted cellulosic fibrous material take into account the level of dissolved organic materials (DOM), such as lignin, hemi-cellulose, and cellulose, maintaining the DOM level at about 100 g/l throughout the cook (particularly kraft cook). In order to make sure there is sufficient liquid to slurry the material in the feed system of a two vessel system, some liquid is withdrawn from the circulation conduits between the digester and impregnation vessel, cooled, and fed to the feed system. In a vapor phase digester, the level of liquid at the top of the digester is more precisely controlled by circulating some of the withdrawn liquid from a circulatory loop of the digester to the level tank associated with the feed system. An in-line drainer may be provided in the feed system between a make-up liquor pump and a liquid inlet conduit leading to the top of an impregnation vessel. Within the digester, a set of extraction/dilution screens is provided specifically positioned and spaced from each other, and with respect to a reintroduction conduit opening, so that mixing of different DOM concentration liquids is minimized.

A conventional continuous digester is modified so as to provide a countercurrent cook throughout the entire height of the digester. Instead of connecting an upper mid-point extraction screen to a flash tank, that screen is closed off and extraction is provided at the top of the digester, utilizing an in-line drainer to remove some of the liquor and feed it to a flash tank. The liquor not removed recirculates through a pressure screen to an impregnation vessel, and then back to the digester. A cooling circulation is provided just below the top extraction. Valves are provided in the liquor discharged from the drainer and a conduit from the upper mid-point extraction which may be manipulated to return the digester to conventional operation, including the addition of white liquor to the bottom recirculation.
