    Abstract: An illustrative example embodiment of a device for controlling movement of an elevator car includes an emergency stopping supervisor, such as a processor and memory associated with the processor. The emergency stopping supervisor is configured to: determine when an indication from an electrical protection device indicates that the elevator car should be stopped, issue a command for the elevator car to move at a reduced speed, monitor continued movement of the elevator car at the reduced speed, and continue to allow the elevator car to move at the reduced speed until a selected condition exists or immediately cause the elevator car to stop if the reduced speed is not within a predetermined range.

    Abstract: An elevator system includes an elevator car, a pressure sensor, and a controller. The car is adapted to move vertically within a hoistway and defines a passenger compartment adapted to be occupied by at least one passenger. The sensor is configured to measure air pressure in the passenger compartment. The controller is configured to control travel of the elevator car, receive a plurality of pressure signals from the sensor indicative of changing air pressure in the passenger compartment over a prescribed time period, and execute a preprogrammed application configured to apply a current car velocity and the changing air pressure to a preprogrammed ear pressure table. Upon application, the controller outputs a command to reduce the current car velocity if application of the preprogrammed ear pressure table determines a differential ear pressure would otherwise exceed a preprogrammed threshold.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for an elevator system that includes at least one elevator car including a floor and a plurality of walls, and at least one seat assembly supported on at least one of the plurality of walls or on the floor. A detector is configured to detect when a passenger is on the at least one seat assembly. A passenger retention member is configured to resist movement of a passenger relative to the at least one seat assembly. An indicator is configured to provide an indication regarding a condition of the passenger retention member when the detector detects a passenger on the at least one seat assembly.

    Abstract: A method of operating a safety net system of an elevator system is provided. The method includes installing a sensor in an elevator pit of the elevator system and executing a learning phase of the sensor to verify successful installation of the sensor. The executing of the learning phase includes causing the sensor to sense physical characteristics of a portion of the elevator pit when the elevator pit is known to have certain physical characteristics to generate a background reading, comparing the background reading against a reading associated with known physical characteristics of the portion of the elevator pit and verifying the successful installation of the sensor based on results of the comparing.

    Abstract: An intelligent normal force release supervisor including: a processor; and a memory including computer-executable instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to perform operations, the operations including: receiving a signal from a dispatching controller that an elevator car and a propulsion system are going to park for a selected period of time; requesting a confirmation from a brake controller to confirm that a brake system of the elevator car and the propulsion system are deployed; receiving the confirmation from the brake controller to confirm that the brake system of the elevator car and the propulsion system are deployed; and transmitting a command to a normal force controller to reduce normal force on wheels of the propulsion system, wherein the normal force controller is configured to actuate a normal force generator to reduce the normal force on the wheels of the propulsion system in response to the command.
