Each engagement member has a strap extension with a free end and an opposing end which connects to a pair of support member each having a hook at their end. The clamping devices, hooks and locking members are attached to the interior of the tire casing and tightened by the lifting devices thereby holding the tire casing in place.

The assembly is attachable between a pair of underbody support beams and includes a tire carrier for a spare tire and wheel and a plurality of spring and damper assemblies positioned between the carrier and support beams. The assemblies have at least one leaf spring and bushing, and are selected to provide a predetermined level of vibration modes and modal damping for the assembly. A method is also provided for reducing road vibration in a vehicle having an underbody support structure, including supporting a spare tire carrier using a plurality of spring and damper assemblies configured to absorb and damp an oscillating mode of the support structure to a predetermined level to produce a desired post-damped road response, thereby increasing vehicle ride comfort.

The tire carrier of the present invention includes a subframe that is pivotably attached to the frame of the trailer, and the subframe is moveable between a raised storage or travel position and a lowered readily accessible load position. The subframe preferably includes a wing nut or similar retaining bar that threads onto a threaded rod in order to clamp the spare tire to the subframe. The tire carrier also includes a convenient spring loaded handle attached to the subframe for raising and lowering the subframe between the storage and load positions. Finally, the handle includes a portion which engages the frame of the trailer in order to secure the subframe in the raised position while the trailer is traveling.

A vehicle spare tire hanger arrangement comprises an elongated carrier member suspended from the vehicle by together with first and second holding rods depending from the vehicle underside for storing either a minimum or a maximum thickness spare tire substantially horizontally therebelow. The carrier member comprises a main tire support portion having first and second connectors adjacent each end thereof with each connector offset a predetermined dimension from one side of the main support portion. The first holding rod lower end is attached to the first end connector by a universal hinge assembly enabling the carrier member, upon release of the second holding rod from the second connector, to be pivoted about a transverse horizontal axis from a horizontal tire stowage position to a downwardly angled tire removal position. The universal hinge assembly enables the operator to rotate the downwardly angled carrier member about its longitudinally extending axis of rotation, which includes the end connectors, between a pair of tire stowage modes. In one mode, the end connectors are oriented below the main support portion such that a minimum thickness tire is adapted to be supported on one side of the main support portion. To attain the other tire stowage mode, the universal hinge assembly is unlocked and the carrier member rotated 180 degrees wherein the end connectors are oriented above the main support portion enabling a maximum thickness tire to be supported on the opposite side thereof.

A spare tire locking device for truck-trailer wheels and the like vehicles and for use in association with a conventional tire carrier mounted on the underside of the vehicle, comprising a generally gull-shaped member having a pair of upper and outwardly extending horizontal arms adapted to overlie the rim portion only of the wheel, a lower flat central portion connecting with the inner ends of the horizontal arms through a pair of upright members, a stud projecting downwardly from each horizontal arm, the studs being receivable in diametrically opposite bolt holes in the rim for bolting the gull-shaped member against the rim with the central portion and upright member being received in the pre-existing central opening in the rim, a hollow cylinder attached to the upper surface of the flat central portion, a smaller cylindrical tube attached to the upperside of the flat central portion in concentric relation with the cylinder and communicating with the cylinder through a hole in the central portion, and a T-bar having a vertical portion adapted to pass first through a pre-bored hole in the conventional tire carrier on which the wheel is mounted with the gull-shaped member attached thereto, the T-bar being adapted to pass upwardly through the tube and into the interior of the cylinder, the T-bar having a horizontal handle connected to the lower end of the vertical portion and a hole at the upper end of the vertical portion for attachment of a padlock to the vertical portion when it projects upwardly into the cylinder.
