The food items may be arranged to resemble the whole food item in the package. Each segment of the food item may be individually wrapped so that one or more segments can be save for later use. The segmented food items with associated microwave susceptors are particularly suitable for being dispensed from refrigerated vending machines located in schools, factories, food courts, convenience stores and where microwave ovens are available.

The heating effect of a microwave susceptor can be improved by providing a pattern of microwave transparent areas in the susceptor. The transparent areas are preferably circles having a diameter of about 0.5 inch. The distance between adjacent circles is preferably about 0.5 inch. The susceptor may be used to brown and crispen the crust of frozen pizza heated in a microwave oven. The crust of the pizza is browner, especially at its central area, than the crust of pizza heated using a conventional susceptor.

For example, the lines of tear perforations can divide the circular substrate into a plurality of wedges that can be used, for example, to heat a slice of pizza instead of the entire pizza. Additionally, the line(s) of tear perforations can divide a box or sleeve, which may contain multiple food products (spring-rolls, for example) into individual supports (boxes or sleeves), each containing a single food product.

A paperboard container assembly for the microwave cooking and browning of food. The assembly is defined by an outer carton which surrounds a separate elongated tray. The tray is formed of a unitary blank of paperboard, a microwave interactive material and a polymer coating. The interactive material browns and crisps the food surface where contacted. The ends of the tray carry elongated, hollow feet to both support the tray bottom in vertially spaced relation to the carton bottom and to prevent shifting of the tray relative to the carton. Openings along the tray sidewalls and hollow feet prevent both scorching or burning of the paperboard and delamination of the polymer coating due to localized heat build-up.

A food package assembly of the type designed to serve the dual function of providing a package for shipment and storage of a prepared food and of microwave heating of the food in a manner producing a browning or crisping effect that is particularly adapted to the needs of foods, such as French bread pizzas and garlic bread, which cannot be crisped in a microwave oven via the use of a single planar microwave interactive crisping layer and which, due to the grease and/or vapor driven out of them cannot be heated in a microwave oven in a closely confined manner without becoming soggy. In accordance with preferred embodiments, a food product is received upon an inner tray member that coacts with an outer package body to cradle the food product so that the adjoining surface thereof will be crisped by a microwave interactive heating layer applied to the facing surface of the inner tray member. Additionally, venting is provided through openings at opposed ends of the outer package body and via venting channels formed between side wall portions of the inner tray member and adjoining inner wall portions of the outer package body, communication between the top side of the inner tray member and the venting channels being provided via venting holes and/or end edge recessing or notching in accordance with various embodiments.
