    摘要: A process for manufacturing a low-friction ball-and-socket joint is provided in which a ball pivot with a pivot area and with a joint ball made in one piece therewith is first introduced into a bearing shell (2, 2.1, 2.2) and the latter is in turn introduced through an opening (4) into a joint housing (5), wherein the opening (4) of the housing (3) is closed by a housing cover (5) after the introduction of the components. The pivot area (1.1) of the ball pivot (1) is then introduced into a recording device of a torque measuring device to determine the torque of the joint between the bearing shells (2.1,2.2) and the joint ball (1.2). The housing cover (5) is then permanently fixed by a rolling device (10) by bending over a rolled edge (9) of the housing arranged on the housing (3). The torque of the joint is continuously measured during the rolling operation and is compared with a presettable set point. The housing cover (5) displaces the upper bearing shell (2.2) in the axial direction against the joint ball (1.2) and generates a pressing force, which is partially compensated by a support element (6) at the housing cover (5). The rolling process is immediately terminated when the set point of the torque of the joint is reached.

The cover is constructed with a boss in its outermost circumference so that when assembling the ball joint, the bearing flange that is inserted in the interior of the box, that is closed by the cover, does not burst. Moreover, the bearing is maintained fixed to the assembling place as it is desired, for the perfect operation of the ball joint. The cover constructed in this manner functions as a limiting piece in the assembling process, so that, even if too strongly pressed upon the bearing flange, it may burst only the outermost part of the bearing flange preserving its major part, that will be retained between the recess provided in the interior of the ball joint box and the space immediately posterior to the boss constructed in the outermost circumference of the cover, thus keeping the bearing fixed to its place.

    摘要: An assembly technique and device for enclosing an open end of a movable socket (10) comprised of fully hardened materials with an expanding cover-plate (66) and for controlling the expansion of the cover-plate (66) to provide a central orifice (67) of predetermined dimensions to facilitate the installation of a grease fitting. During assembly, various internal components of the movable socket, including the pressure plate, are installed within a housing (12) through a posterior opening (16) with the cover-plate is positioned over the components. A two-stage ram (100) having a contact surface and a concentric pivot punch (142, 158) is brought into engagement with the cover-plate. Pressure exerted by the two-stage ram is transferred to the cover-plate through the contact surface, expanding the cover-plate to conform to the contact surface and enclosing the internal components within the socket housing. The exerted pressure additionally results in the extension of the concentric pivot punch into the central orifice of the cover-plate, controlling the expansion of the cover-plate and establishing the central orifice to predetermined dimensions upon closure of the socket housing.

    摘要: An assembly technique for closing a movable socket (10) without the need to deform or displace any portion of the socket housing (12), thereby allowing for the use of fully hardened socket housing materials. The internal components of the movable socket are installed within the housing through an opening (16), and a conical cover-plate (66) is positioned over the components, within the opening. An assembly tool (100) configured to exert pressure on the conical cover-plate is brought into engagement with the plate, and a downward load is applied, expanding the plate to seat within a circumferential groove (22) in the housing. The assembly tool includes a specifically contoured face (109) which alters the angle at which pressure is exerted against the expanding conical cover-plate as the plate deforms to a generally planar configuration, closing the opening in the housing. Once expanded, the cover-plate seats within the groove formed in the interior surface of the housing, thereby securing the internal components within the housing.
