A regenerator energy exchange device comprises an energy recovery wheel having interchangeable segments of a heat and moisture exchange matrix material. Each segment may include one or more desiccants having different moisture adsorption characteristics deposited thereon. Alternatively, the energy recovery wheel may contain a matrix which is uniformly coated with at least two different desiccants. In still another embodiment, the wheel may have zones of different desiccants or desiccant combinations which are arranged in series in the direction of air flow through the matrix to provide different moisture adsorption characteristics along the air flow path. The zone closest to a highly humid airstream may contain, for example, a type 5 desiccant, while the zone closest to a conditioned exhaust airstream may contain a type 3 desiccant. All configurations are designed to increase the effectiveness of the energy recovery device over the middle to high range of relative humidities.

A heat recovery ventilator includes four rectangular regenerative heat exchangers, two blowers, a rotating air switch all disposed in a compact rectangular housing. The regenerative heat exchangers are made of a pleated HEPA filter material. The HEPA filter material captures at least 99.97% of particles having a diameter greater than 0.3 microns. Alternatively, the HEPA filter material is rated at least 85% Dust-Spot Efficiency percentage as measured by ASHRAE Standard 52.1-1992, Dust-Spot Procedure. The regenerative heat exchangers are stationary with stationary seals between the outside and inside climate. One of the blowers blows a stale airstream out through the heat exchangers; the other blower blows a fresh airstream in through the heat exchangers. The rotating air switch operates in conjunction with the two blowers producing the necessary flow reversal through each regenerative heat exchanger to allow heat and moisture exchange between the stale airstream and the fresh airstream. The rotating air switch is completely on the inside climate side of the regenerative heat exchangers preventing freeze up in cold weather. The rotating air switch uses clearance seals.

A novel method and apparatus to dehumidify air provides enhanced dehumidification efficiency over conventional dehumidification apparatuses. A reusable dehumidification element disk provides a disk section to strip water from an air stream. The disk is rotated so that the saturated disk section enters a separate chamber where the water can be stripped from the disk with a stream of regeneration air. The regeneration air stream is recycled and is not split from or mixed with the air stream requiring dehumidification. The result is a more efficient dehumidification than in apparatuses which require the influent air stream to be divided into separate streams for dehumidification and regeneration functions.

A condensation and frost control system for cooler and freezer doors is disclosed which includes a desiccant dehumidifier containing a desiccant body, a blower for drawing air into the desiccant body and discharging dry air therefrom. A duct system conveys the dried dry air from the blower to predetermined locations around the side edges of the door to distributed the dry air along at least a predetermined portion of the door thereby to prevent condensation and sublimate frost and ice on the predetermined portion of the door directly from solid to gas.

A method of conditioning a process stream of air in an air conditioning system wherein a process stream of air is dehumidified and cooled to provide a conditioned stream of air for introducing to a conditioned space. The method comprises the steps of providing an adsorption wheel having a multiplicity of passages through which process air can flow for adsorbing moisture therefrom, the wheel capable of adsorption of moisture from the process air and of regeneration on a continuous basis as the wheel rotates. An indirect evaporative cooler is provided having a dry side and a wet side separated by a moisture-inpervious wall wherein heat is extracted from said dry side through the wall to the wet side. Cooling in the dry side is achieved by evaporation of water into air passing through the wet side. The process air is passed through the adsorption wheel to remove moisture therefrom to provide a moisture-depleted stream of process air exiting the adsorption wheel. The adsorption wheel is regenerated by passing hot gases therethrough to remove moisture from the adsorption wheel. The moisturedepleted stream of process air exiting said adsorption wheel is divided into a relatively hot stream and a relatively cool stream, and the relatively hot stream of process air is introduced into the wet side of the indirect evaporative cooler, and the relatively cool stream is introduced into the dry side, the relatively hot stream evaporating water thereinto thereby cooling the moisture-impervious wall and removing heat from the relatively cool stream to provide cooled air to be introduced to a conditioned space.

A method of conditioning a process stream of air in an air conditioning system wherein the process stream of air is dehumidified and cooled to provide a conditioned stream of air, the method comprising providing an adsorption wheel having a multiplicity of passages through which the process air can flow for adsorbing moisture therefrom, the wheel capable of adsorption of moisture from the process air and of regeneration on a continuous basis as the wheel rotates. The method further comprises passing a first portion and a second portion of the process air to be conditioned through the wheel to remove moisture therefrom, the first portion of the process air passing through the wheel after the regeneration to remove beat from the wheel prior to the second portion passing through the adsorption wheel; then introducing the first portion of the process air to a heat exchanger to remove heat from the first portion. A second stream of air is directed through the heat exchanger to remove heat therefrom to provide a second heated air stream. The second heated air stream is heated with a heater to provide hot gases having a temperature sufficient to regenerate the adsorption wheel. The wheel is regenerated by passing the hot gases therethrough to remove moisture from the adsorption wheel. The first portion of the process air after passing through the heat exchanger and the second portion of the process air after passing through adsorption wheel is directed to an evaporative cooler, the process air is cooled to provide a stream of air having a controlled level of humidity.

A two stage rotary concentrator takes the gas from the first stage desorption section and passes it back into a second stage concentrator process. A second stage desorption gas is passed over the rotary concentrator in a second stage desorption section. The gas from the second stage desorption section may then be passed for final treatment. The invention greatly reduces the volume of air which must be sent for final treatment.

An improved dehumidification system for automotive use includes a rotating, wheel like heat exchanger with axially open cells that carry a water adsorbing material. Opposed ambient air and heated air flows, covering opposite halves of the wheel, continually adsorb water on one side and are recharged on the other side. Alternating radially closed cells between the axially open cells carry no desiccant material, but receive a cross cooling flow, on the water adsorbing side of the wheel only, to remove the heat released during the water adsorption process. The desiccant recharging process on the other side of the wheel is not disturbed by the cross cooling flow.
