摘要:
The self-phase modulation (SPM) effect in a dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) segment of an optical fiber transmission system is used to reduce the required length of the DCF segment needed to compensate the chromatic dispersion of a single mode fiber (SMF) segment of the system. It was determined that the length of the DCF segment at which the widest opening of the electrical eye diagram margin occurs, for a given optical input power to the DCF segment, decreases with increasing optical input power to the DCF segment. Increasing the optical input power to and reducing the length of the DCF segment thus both improves bit error rate of the system and reduces the cost for compensating for dispersion.

An optical wavelength multiplex transmission method uses a band around a zero dispersion wavelength of an optical fiber to compensate for waveform degradation, which is produced by a synergetic effect of self phase modulation and chromatic dispersion, to increase transmission distance and transmission rate in optical systems. The optical dispersion compensation method is performed in an optical system including a transmitter, a repeater and a receiver, which collectively transmit and receive optical information along the optical fiber. Light is transmitted within a transmissible band which is defined by an allowable dispersion value determined from a synergetic effect of self phase modulation and group velocity dispersion in the optical fiber. The transmissible band is set on a shorter wavelength side than a shorter wavelength end .lambda..theta.-.DELTA..lambda..theta. or on a longer wavelength side than a longer wavelength end .lambda..theta.+.DELTA..lambda..theta. of the zero-dispersion wavelength deviation range of the optical fiber. The zero dispersion wavelength .DELTA..theta. the optical fiber is shifted to apparently arranged the signal light into the transmissible band to compensate for the dispersion amount of the optical transmission system.

A hybrid telemetry system includes a plurality of telemetry networks configured to communicate a modulated signal representing digital data along adjoining sections of a pipe string. The plurality of telemetry networks may each be optimized or particularly suitable for the configuration of the pipe string, the well, and/or the environment of the well occurring in each of the adjoining sections. Some of the plurality of telemetry networks may overlap to provide redundancy of the communication of the digital data.

Multiple receivers are comprised in a flexible coherent transceiver of a multi-span optical fiber network. Each of the multiple receivers is operative to handle communications on a respective channel. The multiple receivers measure optical characteristics. For each of the multiple receivers, the optical characteristics include optical nonlinear interactions on the respective channel, the optical nonlinear interactions being at least partially dependent from one span to another span. An optical power of a signal on each of the multiple channels is adjusted as a function of the optical characteristics.

An optical transmitter configured to mitigate the adverse effects of fiber nonlinearity by altering the transmitted constellation symbols based on specific nonlinear characteristics of a fiber-optic link over which the optical transmitter is configured to transmit and on an a priori estimate of the nonlinear component of the optical-signal distortion in that fiber-optic link. In an example embodiment, each constellation symbol is altered by a respective perturbation amount determined using (i) a calculated or measured nonlinear transfer function corresponding to the fiber-optic link and (ii) a set of neighboring constellation symbols that are expected to contribute to the nonlinear distortion of the optical signal carrying the present constellation symbol due to the fiber nonlinearity. In various embodiments, different appropriate perturbation amounts can be selected to approximately pre-compensate nonlinear distortions caused by various nonlinear optical effects, such as four-wave mixing, etc.

The present invention provides a method and system for transmitting data over an optical channel using OFDM with a variable transmission rate. Such method and system feeds an essentially constant transmission power over a predetermined OFDM bandwidth into the optical channel. In an embodiment, at least two OFDM subcarriers may be modulated with signal information derived from a single word of an OFDM symbol. Further thereto, the frequency spacing between the transmitted OFDM subcarriers may be changed.

System, apparatus and method of optical communication are provided for performing digital compensation of the self-phase modulation (SPM) effect experienced by a polarization-division multiplexed (PDM) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexed (OFDM) signal in fiber transmission by compensating a complex digital waveform representing one orthogonal polarization component of the optical PDM-OFDM signal based on both digital waveforms representing two orthogonal polarization components of the PDM-OFDM signal. The compensation of the digital waveform may be further based on an anticipated mean total nonlinear phase shift experienced by the signal during fiber transmission due to SPM. The compensation may be divided into pre-compensation at the PDM-OFDM transmitter and post-compensation at the PDM-OFDM receiver. The fiber transmission link preferably includes a pre-dispersion compensation module, distributed inline dispersion compensation modules, and a post-dispersion compensation module arranged in a judiciously chosen manner.

In an optical amplifier of the present invention, an input light is supplied to one end of an optical fiber connected to an output port, and the power of a light in an opposite direction which is input to the output port from the one end of the optical fiber, is measured, thereby obtaining a stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) occurrence threshold in the optical fiber based on the measurement result. Then, using the SBS occurrence threshold, a relation been the input light power and an occurrence amount of the self phase modulation (SPM) or the like in the optical fiber is obtained to be reflected on a control of the optical amplifier, so that an occurrence of the SPM or the like in the optical fiber is suppressed. As a result, it becomes possible to accurately measure, with a simple configuration, the nonlinear optical properties of the optical fiber actually connected to the output port of the optical amplifier, so that the optical S/N ratio degradation due to a nonlinear optical effect can be effectively suppressed.
